Headed out to Lake Bastrop this morning to see if the bite is as brutal as some of the latest reports have indicated. Got to South Shore launch at 6:30am and was the first person there. I had heard that the lake was down, but totally forgot as I backed the boat down the ramp. Luckily, since I was the only one launching I was hogging up both lanes and went in at an angle....only one of the wheels of my trailer managed to fall off the concrete. Being double lucky was the fact that I only have a 14ft. jon boat trailer so I was able to haul that thing out after launching. Kind of a dangerous launch if you ask me; I think the concrete drop off is only about 7-9ft. from where the water touches the ramp. Only after I did that did I remember reading about someone discussing the same thing. Maybe that's why the launch was empty.

So, lower lake level and all, I went out in search of the fish. I managed to get 4 fairly quickly between 7-8am on the east side of Shovel Cove adjacent to Aretha's Point in about 4-7ft. of water. The first was on a Senko and the next three were on a C-rig with a fluke. I just pulled that thing through all the vegetation slowly and watched that line closely. The next two came on a windblown point across the discharge on the C-rig again, while another came on a western side channel up the North Cove with the Senko. The last one came again on the C-rig near Shovel Cove. All the fish were between 1-2lbs. I was off the lake by 11am.

One thing that I immediately noticed was the amount of hydrilla in the water. I only get to go to Bastrop about 1-2 times a year, the last time being Spring of 2016, so I am not the best expert on the lake. But has there been a bloom in the hydrilla here? I just remember a lot of eel grass during my previous trips.

Fished Bastrop yesterday for the first time. Did pretty good fishing the hydrilla (and there's a lot) where it started to scatter in 7-10' with spinner bait and rattle trap. The water looks to be about 2-3' low which I would think is a lot for a power lake. The launch is sketchy at that level. Not bad when launching the boat because the drop off after the concrete ends seemed to only be about 2". When trailering the boat, I kept 1 axle on the concrete and it was just barely deep enough. If it drops any more though the south ramp will be tough to use.

I have always been told to use the North Shore ramp. Maybe now I know why.
