The best way to do it is for the current owner and the buyer to go to the TPWD office TOGETHER for the boat and motor and then on to the local tax office for the trailer. The current owner will need to bring the titles to the boat and motor. Most boat trailers in Texas are not titled (depends on weight).

It's pretty simple. If the original owner isn't available to go with you then have them fill out the title to the boat and motor. You'll also want to have them give you a bill of sale. In that BOS, separate the dollar amount for the boat, motor and trailer. You pay $2500 for the boat then break it down how ever you want, $1200 boat, $1050 motor, $250 trailer. Get his registration paperwork for the trailer also. Make sure that the seller is the titled person for the boat and motor. Don't let them try to tell you that you don't need titles for motors either. TPWD will ask for it. Call your local office and they'll tell you exactly what you need to do and what forms they require.

No. TPWD collects sales tax on Boat & Motor. You pay 6.25% sales tax on boat & motor,& the title transfer fee at TPWD . On trailer Youll pay 6.25%sales tax & registration fee to the tax district that issues the trailer tags.
Thats why you want the breakdown of price for Boat/Motor & Trailer seperate. License Tag office only collects sales tax on trailer.
TPWD collects sales tax on boat/motor.
TPWD FORMS = Vessel/Boat Application (PWD143)
Outboard Motor Application (PWD 144) TPWD clerks are very helpful. Some vehicle tag office clerks are & some not so much.
