Have a new to me F250 diesel XL. Buddies XLT tells him with message in dash when it goes into the regenerate mode to clean out the soot. Mine hasn't given me any indication that it has gone into regen mode. It must be because I have used about 2.5 gallons in DEF in the 2-3K (or more) miles I have driven it. Anyone else have an XL that can tell me if you get a message on the dash? 2013 6.7 diesel.

So it doesn't regenerate any more? Or regenerates but doesn't indicate it is? If it is how can you tell?

It is now bypassed. It used to flash up on the dash when cleaning the DPF. It was pretty quick.

Dealer could tell you the fastest probably. I would bet it is because of the trim package difference.

If it is not regenerating it will quit running shortly. YOu can tell when it regenerates by watching your instant fuel economy if you have that display, during a regen your economy will fall on its face because the truck is squirting fuel into the exhaust to burn out the DPF.

DEF is not necessarily used during a regen, it is just injected into the SCR and binds with the exhaust gases to form more environmentally friendly gasses... well at least that's the story now.

Stupid question but does your truck actually have the DPF or is it deleted? If the truck isn't regenerating something is happening. It should regenerate approx. once per tank of diesel.

I am not sure if all trim levels give the message. My Platinum does- I am going to delete my DPF soon.

I have a 2012 XL and it will flash a brief message across the bottom info screen. It only stays up for about 2 seconds and it's gone. You should be having at least 1 regen per tank, maybe 2. Unless you stare at that screen a lot, you'll miss it.

Frequency of regens depends a lot on what your doing. City driving/idling they will be more frequent, Highway driving they will be less frequent, you may never see one hwy towing heavy as the exhaust runs hot enough to burn it off without added fuel.

I have a 2013 F250 and have found that when i mostly drive in town on short trips it will regen more often, like every 200 miles or so and if you stop before its done it will be even more. On the highway it may regen once every 250-300 miles. When my boat is hooked up (about 4500#) it never regens even on long road trips.

Usually the engine sounds different too. I can normally tell if i don't catch the message on the dash.

My 2006 Super Duty doesn't have a regenerate option so I can't help you. Would love to get a new one but mine is paid for and I have no desire to go $50K+ in debt right now.
