I find it is best to get them the day of. They will make it over night if cared for in a good filtered tank like a Super Bait Tank or a Grayline.

Use them the day you catch them. Freeze the rest at the end of the day. Unlike minnows, shad are challenging to keep alive very long.

I put the shad in quart size baggies with about 20 to 30 in a bag with a little water. Once they start to thaw, their bodies break down. I don't want to thaw more than I can use in a reasonable time. If you start thawing a 100, by the time you get half way through them, the rest are unusable except as chum.

Yep.. be ready to change bait often. Frozen shad for me works better in swift water.. below dams with some gates open. Honestly on below Denison dam close to bank is killer.. aka striper candy.! Only place I use it. It works if you lucky at the time fish are feeding!? Better than nothing
