So, as we transition into fall I seriously need to improve my skills putting bass in the boat Sept thru Dec. I love the conditions fall brings, but have ALWAYS had trouble getting fish to bite. My confidence is low, not sure where the bass are, not sure what baits/tactics to use.
Surely there's a "Fall Guru" or two on here with some sage advice for East Texas Fall success.

I am not a guru, but I have pretty good luck fishing in the fall. GREAT time in September, October to be throwing a topwater bait, especially if the are schooling. A followup bait could be a weightless fluke. I fish a CB a LOT during this time of the year, rip rap, roadbeds, isolated cover, ledges, humps, etc.. A SB is also a good thing to throw as it imitates the baitfish. Try to match the hatch with the size of bait fish to the size of the willowleaf blade. Again, matching the hatch with a fluke jr. or a fluke pays dividends in finicky fish biting. Go out and have some fun, trying different things to locate the fish. If you are fishing riprap, I prefer to throw a CB the size of the baitfish they are eating, could be a Middle N, SK 3 or 4 size bait or even a crappie colored bait if they are feeding on them. I also like a bluegill pattern this time of year, as well as shad and chartreuse blueback. I like throwing a mixed SB, willowleaf and colorado leaf in gold/nickle combinations. Normally white/chartreuse white during the day and black/red during the night. A JIG is a MUST HAVE bait to fish the isolated cover as well. My biggest fish came in late October on a roadbed with a tree on it and weighed 11-8 oz. Caught on a char/blueback Deep Little N. The weekend before that I caught the lake record smallie on a DLN in crawfish out of Lake Alan Henry, weighed 3-12 on the deliar and was just returned to the water instead of taking her to Post and getting an official weight on her. Hope this helps. Some much better fishermen should come and comment on this subject as well. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Not a Guru, but usually have success with the following:
Go to Monticello and punch "beaver" type baits in the thickest grass or pad stalks you can find. Also slow roll swimmers through the pads.
On Welsh punch the thickest grass you can find with the same "beaver" type baits or throw C'rigged "fluke" type baits up in the timber.
I hope you can fish during the week, Monti and Welsh gets crowded on the weekends in the Fall.
Farmers Almanac is calling for a rough winter, so should have an excellent Fall this year starting in mid-October.

Another good lure this time of year is the Alabama rig, if you have semi open water. GREAT around schooling fish and along rip rap or ledges. If you have a lot of brush or trees, I might not throw it, unless you have a good lure retriever on braid, too. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Pssssssst..... find where the shad are..... and throw a ratltrap. That's my favorite way to fish in the fall. Especially if the shad are near a grass line. Tight lines!

Certainly not a guru; but in the fall, I've had my best days when I've found bait fish getting herded by schools of LMB. One technique that works in the fall 1. Find a cove with bait fish. 2. Find a specific location in that cove where the bait fish can get funneled, cornered, or circled in--if there is current or wind blowing toward that specific location, even better.
