There are quite a few crankbaits on the market now that "claim" their baits will continually dive from 18-25' on an average cast, using 10-12 lb line. However, I have seen reviews that say that the diving depth of some of them is actually several feet less than advertised.

I'm looking for some choices of extra deep diving silent crankbaits that will truly dive at least 18' and also not require extra heavy reeling effort to have them reach that depth when using a reel with a gear ratio around 5:1. and a med heavy to heavy action crankbait rod

Looking forward to reading your honest recommendations.

Thanks,
"befuddled" again...

Well my line choices for getting to that target depth has been 10-12 fluorocarbon, a 7.1.1 reel, a good crankbait rod about 8' in length...
But bait choices have been the strikeking XD 5 & 6. But if you want to spend a few extra bucks by all means step up and get the duo realis. I bought a few, they cast a mile and dig quickly to 20'. I know they go 20'+ because the areas I'm using them in are 20'+ and I'm digging the bottom with a long enough cast. Maybe even try a Z-boss 20' by profound outdoors

What he said ^^^

I absolutely love the Duo Realis 20A. It's a lot easier to fish than a 10XD or Lucky Craft SKT Magnum. The 20A dives quickly, has less drag, and comes equipped with Duo's own hooks, which are the best I've ever had on a crankbait. I can consistently hit the 18-19ft range with the 20A. I've hit 20' feet with an 8XD and I've hit 22' with a 10XD. I use a 5.1:1 reel, a 7'7" crankbait rod, and 12-14lb test.

What crank bait rod are you using?

Here's what gets the job done for me: Duo Realis G87 20A and 15A with a Dobyns 806CB and Lew's BB1 Pro 5.1:1 spooled with 12lb Invsix.

Depends on line weight and reel speed.

Get the Lee Sisson P20, it dives 20' on an average long casts It is silent as well. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Dumb question, but reeling with a 7:1 will make it run shallower than say a 5.5:1, correct?

No...the bait doesn't know what reel you're using. Depth is all about line diameter and line retrieving speed. A 7:1 reel? Just wind it slower.

The big reason for a slow reel, like a 5:1, is for an easier time dragging those baits through the water. More mechanical advantage.

This is a misconception. Reel speed has NOTHING to do with how deep or shallow a bait runs. You can turn the crank very slowly with a 7:1 reel or turn the crank very fast with a 5.5:1 reel. The bait doesn't know what gear ratio the reel is. My point being, you can retrieve one foot of line per second or three feet per second with either reel.

A 7:1 will wear you out throwing a deep diving crankbait

Yep. A 5 or 5.5:1 is perfect for big cranks IMO.

So they seem to contradict a bit but I think I understand:

A 5:1 ish reel has a larger mechanival advantage making it less effort to crank, but you need to turn it faster to keep up with a 7:1 ish

A 7:1 ish you need to crank slower relatively to achieve the same speed, but each turn will be more difficult with the smaller gear and thus wear you out.

Correct for the newbies like me?
