Game warden pulled the Chip from a Lowrance locator that had been underwater 10 days. The chip was good. Warden was able to determine the speed and direction the boat was traveling. All of the "waypoints" were there! No info on the locator, but good to have the chip back.

Trying to follow this but am a bit confused.....was this from a boating accident or am I simply missing something? When you mention "chip" are you meaning the charts card or the actual unit?

it was from a boating accident. Prefer not to share too much info as the issue is still very active.

Hmmm...makes you wonder what else they're recording. Similar to the car and truck ECM debacle..where information stored within is, summoned, and used in court.

Thus my confusion....Data is saved to the unit not to the SD card. Only if you have a blank SD card can you save way points and tracks and trails but it does not save data automatic. One must put the data into the blank SD card.

Hope everyone involved is well....

The Game warden only used the SD card.

On a Lowrance unit, if the record function was turned on then it could be recording to the chip. I use it quite often to record the trip and then review it later on the computer. It can record 2D, side/downscan sonar as well as GPS coordinates, boat speed and direction of travel.

That is correct. all that you mentioned can be recorded to the chip. When I was fishing more I would record the locations of BP and check the chip in my computer. I might have duplicates or other items to look for.
