I understand the potential down side using spot-lock in shallow water but I feel like it would pay huge dividends in water 15 feet deep or more. Considering the rather consistent winds we get 3 out of the 4 months of the year how could not having to touch the TM when fishing deep not be a good enough reason to get one? Am I missing something?

I think the Ultrex is my most favorite thing on my boat. I like my power poles and it depends on what lakes you fish as to which you'd use most but I'm thrilled with my Ultrex.

The only reason not to get a Ultrex is money...

absolutely love mine, was wanting PP originally.
My questions:
Cheaper than PP's
Most of the time my boat is sitting in water too deep for pp and casting to shallower water.
How many months a year am I fishing in shallow flats?

I don't feel comfortable using spot lock or jog feature in the timber:), but that's just a personal preference:))
If money was not an issue, I'd have both.
Can't say as some can, that I use it more than PP, as I don't have them, but the last 3 months I think about it every time I hit spot lock I think, "would I have used PP?". Would change my decision, for me definitely the right money spent. For a change.

Why would you not consider an Xi5 Motor Guide GPS Pinpoint when it will follow map contours or just set it at 20 ft. and let it follow that line with either Lowr. or Humb.? Set it at 30 feet from shore and let it follow the shoreline. Hit the back track feature and it goes the other direction on that same path. I understand that when it locks on it never drifts off that spot? Haven't they been playing this game sense the 90's with the old PinPoint Motors?

I'd put one on a Jon boat.

Ok. If you have owned one I would like to know the down fall; as I am getting ready to equip a new boat. There has to be some Motor Guide owners out there that can tell the good and the bad.

The Xi5 pedal doesn't work as well, the mount overhangs and can hit the bow roller, and your transducer cable cannot be secured to the shaft.

The 36V Ultrex weighs almost a hundred pounds and I'm not sold on its reliability. And the foot switch sticks.

Both of them need some improvement before I jump on board.

I'd go Minn Kota all the way vs. Motorguide. I personally run an Ulterra and man I love it... same as some above, I don't know how I fished without spot lock and the auto pilot. Since Ultrex is supposed to be even better I'd do it in a heartbeat. Although I do love my auto stow and deploy so I'm spoiled with that. But Ultrex with such a sturdy mount vs the Xi5... Ultrex hands down. For many reasons.

I've had an Ultrex 112lb.52"shaft since October 2016,and have had zero problems and it gets used several times a week. It's the BEST thing I've ever bought for my Champion boat. The Spotlock feature is awesome.I liked the Ultrex so much on my Champion,I just purchased another Ultrex for my Xpress flatbottom.Get an Ultrex, you want regret it and will wonder how you fished without an Ultrex. thumb

I fished with the PinPoints back in the 90's and they did all those things and more. I need to hear from a Motor Guide owner.

I had an xi5 and liked it ok, I have two herniated disc in my lower back and it's a PITA to deploy and stow, hang over the front a lot more than my Ultrex. It's all preference and I've had both and I like my Ultrex. I've had it since January no issues at all and I know there has been a few but that goes with anything. It is all about stow and deploy for me.

lots of people talk about the spot lock, and it is great, but I use other features of my Ultrex a lot more. I use auto-pilot all the time when I am working a bank, almost never have to touch the pedal. I use the circle feature when I am working brush piles and humps out deep.

I have used all those options in the timber too with mo problems or damage to my Ultrex.

I did have my foot pedal freeze on me but MK sent me a whole new unit, no questions asked.

Never had Xi5 but I did look at it prior to buying the Ultrex. I went Ultrex because of the mount.

Ultrex spot-lock is like adding "Park" to your boat.
