I've been taking my oldest daughter 16 to Venice, La since she was 13. Now my middle daughter is 13 and need to take her somewhere on a father daughter trip. I was thinking of floating the Dueschtes river in Oregon, but you have to be 14 for that, so maybe next year. What about taking her to either the San Juan outside Telluride or maybe going up to Asheville, NC and fish the Smokey Mtns. Will be hiring a guide to help teach her wherever we decide. Any ideas which would be better or some other place I am not thinking of?' Thanks!

I am from Oregon .... John day river is one of the best small mouth bass fisheries in the USA you can bank fish it. Also lost lake by mount hood is a good place to fly fish in the early morning and at dusk.

I'm a transplanted Oregonian as well thanks to the Army. But have fished all over thanks to them as well. Metolius river, John Day, pretty much any of the coastal streams in Oregon. Eleven Mile canyon, Deckers, Dream Stream , Arkansas in Colorado. You have Montana as well, fished mostly private waters when I went there. Mountains of NC, Virginia, Fished a lot of small streams while I was stationed at Bragg and Eustis. Heading back to Va n a few days to the New River Valley, was so long ago I couldn't remember where to go anymore, lol but give me a little bit and I'll be able to give you some new spots. Coarse there is TX, but I won't get into that. Or the other countries that I've fished, South Korea, Germany, Iraq, Honduras to name a few.

The Bighorn River at Fort Smith, Montana is another option. It is drift boat fishing so you would need a guide. But the guides are used to working with kids. I don't know if they still do it, but for years they offered the "Bighorn Youth Adventure" each summer. The guides donated their time and provided a week of fly fishing to a group of youth. My daughter participated several years ago and she had a blast. The guides were good with kids, the fish population is amazing, and the fishing is good.
Also, I recommend googling "Bighorn Youth Adventure" to see if they are still offering this program. If they are, I encourage you to have them apply for next summer's session.

The White River in northern Arkansas is a fantastic trip. You can float the White and Northfork rivers, and Bull Shoals or Northfork lakes are all within 30 or 45 minute drive. Also take her to Dry Run Creek, right by the trout hatchery. Your daughter can catch the fish of a lifetime and leave you nothing but jealous because it is 16 years and under only. Taneycomo would be a great place for a beginner to learn, and get into plenty of fish to keep the interest. Lots of stuff to around there to keep a lady happy as well.
