What does it hurt? Also, don't get stuck in the mindset that a jig has to have Crawfish scent on it. Not always so! Try other ones. Often times there is a seasonal shift due to the forage base. BUT, it can still be a jig bite. This time of the year Anise/Shad will outfish many other flavors. And Java is doing really well for us in East Texas!
Using scents does not hurt, it is inexpensive, and can have many different benefits. Different brands have different effects also. But people have their favorites. Just like Trucks (Chevy, Ford, Dodge, etc
) The main thing is to not limit yourself in available techniques. Would you ONLY use a 1/4 oz Black jig, all the time???? That's why we are fishermen and companies make many different baits, colors, actions, etc.... Different times require different things. Don't be afraid to experiment. You might find them very effective for your style of fishing and locations. Others might only be "bank beating" or "flipping" and not be doing the "correct" type of fishing. You might be doing the effective and efficient method for your lake and adding scent to your bait might improve and double your effectiveness.
Blanket justification for using scents are:
1. Masks human/adverse scents (gas, deoderant, repellent, etc..)
2. Fish Attractant (Attract the fish, and make them hold on longer)
3. Lubricant (Heavy Grass flippers like their baits to slide easier, Water Based scents do not last very long and have to be reapplied often!)
Just try them.
