Replace gasket and filter or no?

Just flush it and go on?

Mind you I have no clue if it's ever been done? It's a 2001 F150 with 175,000 miles...

Any front end experts on here?

Don't do anything to the tranny. It's already been 175,000 miles without any sort of service. All of the gunk is what is holding the tranny up. Servicing it will only lead to problems.

Trying to save $$$ on PM service will cost you more in the long run.

Don't be cheap and maintain it.....it's a huge investment.

I was under the impression once you've gone that long without any kind of service to the transmission, you're better off not servicing it.

I've heard that too. I honestly don't what's right or wrong.....but doing PM before it gets this far is a must IMO

Click and Clack say the "leave it alone" theory is a myth.

Try taking your car to a shop and have the transmission fluid changed without ever changing it before. Most if not all will tell you they won't touch it. Like others have said, maintain from the start and it should not be an issue.

I have a 2001 Yukon 4x4 that's on its 1st rebuild. It went out at 240,000 miles. It now has 267,000 miles. I've ran 35" mud grapplers since 200,000. It's been a family vehicle so I know it's never once flushed it or anything.. I just bought a brand new 2017 F150 and I'll have it serviced per the manual...

It's gonna go out eventually, that's just all there is to it.

Roll the dice brother, you're toting the note.

Front end parts are designed to be replaced, not maintained (like the old days).

Control arms, tie rod ends, ball joints - heck, they don't even have zerk fittings any more - you can't grease them.

If you touch that transmission at this point you will be sorry unless you want to replace it.

I've heard that from a lot of people.
But it's a 2001 F150

What does the fluid look and smell like Mike , it may be fine as in already done periodicity

If it's somewhat clean and doesn't smell burnt you are probably ok changing it

Transmission fluid is extremely high detergent (if you want to clean your engine, put a quart of tranny fluid in your crankcase about 500 miles before a change), when you change to new fluid it detaches the built up gunk into sludge, which starts sticking valves and solenoid. If it hasn't been maintained regularly, don't touch it.

Trust your own instinct. Your mistakes might as well be your own, instead of someone elses.

Some say a small leak in the pan gasket or at the radiator is a bad thing. Not for me. Mine stays replenished with new, a quart every 6000 miles or so. 1994 Chevy W/T Vortec V-6 with 385,000 miles on it. Still going....but not when it's hot, A/C has been out for 3 years now.
