I can't decide if I really want to take a plunge into getting a swimbait combo. I've heard not a lot of people have luck with it, however I want to throw a rigs any one have any advice haha

People that don't have luck are the people that give up. Advice: don't get in too deep until you figure out if you like the "game". It's as expensive as you want it to be but I'd start with a osprey or another paddle tail style soft bait and get to throwing

Before you dive off into a heavy swimbait set up, why don't you try swimbaits on your current equipment? There's an article recently posted by Hackney on bassmaster about the subject.

The hollow-belly swimbait that 99.9% of those guys throw is a Basstrix. 5, 6 and 7". The only thing that changes is the weight.

You can throw that rig on just about every rod/reel you already own. Dial in from there

The Dobyns 806HSB rod handles 2-8oz swimbaits as well as being my choice for 10xds and umbrella rigs with the parabolic action. The most versatile swimbait rod I've found...

I use a 7ft9in Shimano A-rig rod with a Lews Super Duty 5.4-1 reel, 65# Suffix 832 braid and that set up works very well for an A-rig. I usually throw the Yum flash mob jr with Berkley weighted swim baits. They come in packs of 5ea. so that works perfect. I usually get two different color swim baits of the same size and have 4 of one color on the outer wires and a different color for the center wire. Now you have two different full set ups to throw. Many times they will hit the off color one. I tried using a larger swim bait in the middle but didn't like that as well as using the same size but in a different color.

I have stouter rod and reels for big swim baits and do not use braid with them.

Agreed. There are a ton of different styles of swimbaits. I'd recommend starting out slow with a 4" or 5" paddle tail style swimbait. Something along the lines of a Basstrix or Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper will be a great starting place. You can throw these on any 7' mh, fast, rod. Rig it on a jighead or a weighted swimbait hook.

take 3 different weights on the same 5-7" swimmer and only use those three rods for a few days on the water, learn fall and speed then dial in your retrieve....then you can go buy some of the specialty equipment...and a glide bait is not a swimbait...

Give it a try.....I have had a couple different popular tackle store owners tell me that swimbaits are one of their biggest sellers the past couple of years. Not just talking about little small plastic baits either.

I have had some luck with smaller swimbaits, the two inch chartreuse shad prerigged storm, I just really want to throw an a rig this fall for schooling bass,

The "game" can be very rewarding and very disappointing all at the same time! Just don't give up on it. It WILL work sooner or later. I've caught my biggest fish on swimbaits.

Definitely start with Basstrix. I have thrown all sorts of hollow bodies and IMHO the basstrix has best action and looks the most natural going through the water. Skinny dipper is good and less expensive but I prefer the basstrix.

As far as rods I have heard good things about Dobyns but I use the McCain T-Roy Swamp Series "The Reaper" rod. Great action, fast tip, very sensitive!

As far as reels, I prefer Lews on all my moving baits. I like the big Spool of the Lews BB1 or BB2. 5:4.1 or 6:4.1 will get her done that way you can reel fast but keep it in the strike zone. It's all about the retrieve in the Swimbait game. Get that dialed in on how they want it, "game" on.

But as stated above, try it on your equipment first so that you don't break the bank before you even get started.

Your not going to know if you like the game if you dont get the right stuff. You get something just to get by with you wont like it. It is night and day if you do not have the right set up. Speaking from experience, and its pretty much all I do.

And are you talking more A-rig or swim baiting?

Careful with braid, you get into heavier swimbaits, braids the worse at snapping when casting.

If I was in your position, I would go ahead and pick up a Shimano Curado 300 on a Dobyns 807HSB followed by a couple of Deps250's (flash carp, and mullet) and a couple of 8" rising son's in a shad pattern. Take that one rod and nothing else to a lake with heavy Florida strain stockings for a few weeks during April and October/November. If you can't get it going, then give me a shout and I'll buy your rod and baits off of you.

I'm gonna give you some advice...one bite on a big weedless rising son or a Hudd and your gonna be screwed and need a loan from the bank. It's addicting and that's no shi+ just pure straight talk dude.

I decided to start out with lower-end equipment to see if I liked throwing those monsters: an Okuma Reflexions rod for $70 and a Shimano Cardiff for about $120 from Tackle Warehouse. I liked the set-up, and am still using it.
