I've posted questions and read many other's on getting your boat trailer registered (for me new Texas resident)in Denton County. That whole deal is a joke. I had all my paperwork/documentation, inspection in order. I go in confident that I would get my tag. The one line on the VTR-141 form where they ask for carrying capacity I put what my trailer info say's which is 3,500lbs. plus the trailer empty weight 1,200lbs (I got that from the boat manufacturer along with the boat weight). That put my "gross" over the 4,500 mark. "sir you have to get a weight certificate on your trailer" she says. I'm about ready to blow a gasket at this point. So I get ready to leave and my wife say's let me go try. I say good luck!! She get's a ticket and waits and get's called to a different lady. My wife waves me in and asks what does the boat weigh? I tell her roughly 2,000lbs. The lady corrects my paperwork and as she goes to get my tag the OTHER lady stops her and says something and the new lady says "well they corrected the boat weight" and brings me my tag and we pay and leave. The main problem is that paperwork is generic for ALL trailers not one for boat and one for standard trailers. Anyway I'm thankful for my wife and the "new lady" and don't have to deal with them again until December!!

Most of it is they like to give you the run around so they don't have to do their job.

If that's the case you have completed it incorrectly. It probably doesn't matter and you will probably never have trouble with it. It is really simple you can get on the texas department of transportation site and read it all in plain English. Trailsers under gvwr of 3000 lbs no inspection no brakes. trailers 3000 lbs or more need brakes but not inspection. Trailers 4500 lbs and over need brakes and inspection. If your boat motor and trailer as you will tow them weigh less than 4500 lbs then your ok.

I think the problem with the generic form is they want to know what the max weight you can carry on any given trailer. My boat trailer specs say max load capacity 3,500lbs. BUT my boat only weighs probably 1,800lbs with the motor. they take the trailer weight and carrying capacity and get the gross. Which is fine with a hauling trailer. a boat/trailer is a fixed weight. The "capacity" term threw me off.

4500 on title no inspection. If you read the law it says over 4500. My trailer is 4500 no inspection. Johnny

Actually it's about the GVWR and VWR which are necessary for the maximum amount of weight you can carry.
In either case they probably won't mess with it on the second registration. The First Lady was most likely accurate.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but GVWR includes VWR. That's just my understanding because trailer weight is part of gross weight.

In either case they probably won't mess with it on the second registration. The First Lady was most likely accurate. She was accurate the problem was the term "capacity" on the form. I told her my total weight was less than 4500 and she didn't ask the weight of the boat. My frustration clouded my thought process as I put what the form was asking which was 3,500. She could've helped me out just a little...

Wise county ladies smile and take my money. Never an issue with them for 25 years. Both my trailers have dual axles, so I can carry more than 4500 easy, but usually don't.

They should of had you get inspection if coming from another state. When I transferred mine from La. I showed the lady the title and pointed out that it had no weight. I asked her twice if I needed to weigh it and she said no just inspection. They print out a piece of paper and mark it up with what you need. When you go back they will ask for that piece of paper. So I get my inspection done and go back 2 days later. Now she tells me I need to get it weighed because there it is no weight on La. titles. I told her that I was just in there 2 days ago and specifically asked twice and even pointed out the lack of weight on the title and she no not necessary. I was hoppin mad because I had just passed Love's with the boat coming back from lake. So I head home hook the boat up and weigh it. Weighed in at 4620 and I was thinking if I did not have that 45 gallons of gas I would have been below 4500. Well I get my title and all it has on it is the trailer weight. The space for GVWR is blank. Trailer weight is heavy but at 1850 it is well below 4500.

This is why we need to privatize things....Incompetence in a State/Fed job still = job security...in a private sector job ...not so much security...way too common a problem
