I am green as they come, just want to get started. My wife and daughter want to take a trip and I am trying to find a place that I can get out and fly fish (for the first time) and a place close enough that I can take them to do some stuff as well. Anybody out there have any suggestions? From what I have researched, it looks like TX hill country may have some options. Thanks for input.

You can't beat the Hill Country. Great water is all over the place.

This is a great book to have if you're headed down for the first time:

Man that's a big question. The two places that come to mind, where you could still entertain your family.

-Kerrville - fishing the Guadalupe above, below, and in town is good (going up river above Hunt, TX is my prefered fishing area), it's not far from Fredericksburg, Luckenbach, Enchanted Rock ect. for the wife and daughter.

-San Marcos/New Braunfels area - you can fish the San Marcos River, Lower Guadalupe and Blanco easily from there. Lots of other stuff for the family to do as well - outlet malls, Gruene, dining, ect.

Blanco and Johnson City haven't been mentioned. Both have interesting little downtowns and state parks with river access.

Reimer's Ranch on the Pedernales!!! Beautiful! Several good wineries close by and Dripping Springs is a cool town. Also check out Pedernales State Park which is close to Johnson City like Mitt suggested. Colorado Bend is beautiful and awesome in every way, but it is literally in the middle of nowhere. Llano is only about 30-45 mins away though and is a great little town. Also, the Llano River has several access points and is loaded with sunfish. The Guadalupe is the most obvious answer to where to fly fish in Central Texas and you can fish it in countless spots...love all these places and I just bought my first fly rod a week ago! Been fishing them my whole life though.

I'd also second Pedernales Falls state park, especially for kids because if they get bored fishing they can swim, explore the nature trails and do tons of other activities. McKinney Falls state park is also another possibility which is a bit closer to Austin but provides much of the same amenities.

Another possibility is taking a trip with Alvin of All Water Guides on the Lower Colorado. I took my brother in law who is a newcomer to fly fishing on a trip with Alvin and it was great. He can make it as technical or as easy as you'd like and he is one hell of an easy going and fun guy to spend an afternoon with.
