I've often heard the early bird gets the worm but I'm kinda confused?? I heard this Gravely dude up on Louisville had the secret of "properly" rigging and deploying of sour gummy worms. I hear he rigs them in such a manner that his boat barely has visible waterline when in route back to the dock with all those whisker fish he catches using "said" methods. Anyone care to share their experience with "said" methods? I hear that the only way you can get the scoop is to fish with this Gravely dude. Any info will be appreciated! Thinking about headed to Louisville to LEARN THE SECRET! clap

And Tom, I have developed a rig I call the worm leash that works great even in this high heat. I will show you how I tie one Saturday.

You can prolly catch more blues off the back of Toms dock where he cleans fish than you can anywhere else on LV.

I seen it myself-

I must admit. I am intrigued. With the disguised way Finfeather was holding the bag the other day, I wrote down what I could read. Then I jotted a few possibles of what I could not see fully. So I went to Wal-Mart after work. First I had to find where they moved the candy stash. If not found, then I would proceed to to sporting goods to check there. But no need. I found 'em in the candy stash aisle. Brand name is "Trolli". Item name is "Sour Brite Crawlers". Also noted up top as "America's Best Selling Gummi Worm". But they don't say >>> why <<< (eat them, or fish with them, or both).

Anyway, they are 3 bags short now. In 4 oz. bluish plastic bags noting about 3.5 servings per bag. A serving is 8 worms. So about 28 worms per bag. $1.74 per bag at Wal-Mart. Hey, they are low in sodium too. So you won't be giving your BlueCats High Blood Pressure. That's a good thing, right?!?

Bait cost tally---
$1.74 + tax (x 0.825) 0.14 = $1.88 per bag divided by 28 average per bag is 0.6771428 cents per bait (hook). We'll just round it up to 7 cents a hook. I would assume this is very economical. However, as just noted it melts in the water, due to the heat. So we'll throw in an average loss (spoilage) of 15% due to that there heat margin stuff. Take that 28 worms and you lose 4.2 which we'll round up to 5 to be safe. So that leaves 23 worms that can put in an average work day (15 minutes). If they don't produce in that time, I say, fire them. Unless my math is off, we're gonna go with 12.23 cent each now. Yikes, over budget. Just kidding. Anyways, it looks to be costs will run 7 cents to 12 1/4 cents per full time working gummi worm. Plus you get as a bonus- 5 part time working worms. Let's see if they try to squirm out of that.

It seems to be classified as candy, so it is taxable. You cannot get a farm or ranch tax reduction or claim exemption for "Kitty" feed. Picture that. Throw on about 40 or 50 bags in your cart & get to the counter & ask to fill out a tax exemption form. Make a cashier's day as you explain that one.

I just noticed that the 2nd & 3rd bag only cost $1 each though, as per my receipt. They must have had a "Kitty" special or something.

Uh Oh, there is a Safety Warning. I don't know if it due to FDA or OSHA regulations. But it says, "Small objects such as hard and soft candies may inadvertently become lodged in the throat." My question is, should we advise the BlueCats, or just let them choke on them? Could we actually become liable? Whew, I guess we would need to consult a "Kitty" lawyer for legal wormy advice.

Anyways, that's my Initial Research Report & I'm sticking with it, regardless how Gummi it is.

I guess all I can say, is Gee Thanks Tom!!! You realize this just means more research for me? That's all I need!

Do these really work? Do you thread on like a night crawler? Has anyone tried dipping these in punch type bait or is it not needed? Thanks for info!

Tom, Finfeather, El Gato---

I almost forgot. Seriously now, in the 1977 Fisherman's Field Guide (HB book), pp. 96-97, it speaks of the 3 scents most attractive to Catfish, found by experiments conducted by Utah fishery biologists. Ready? Drum Roll ... Number 1 was worms (did not say what kind). Number 2 was liver (did not pinpoint which). But Number 3 will catch you offguard, as it is human saliva.

It notes earlier that the old superstition of spitting on your bait for good luck, may have been based in fact. But they also note that fish are alarmed by the odor of perspiration, while being attracted to human saliva.

So try throwing a gummi worm in your mouth for a few seconds & wash it around, then hook it & see what happens. Of course I am sure it would be best to have just eaten something such as a burger or shrimp. But you never know.

Gummy worms are all you need. No need to dip em in dead red or punch bait. Like Tom said " they don't stay on the hook when the water temp goes over 89". That's where the worm leash rig really shines. Make sure the worms are the sour variety and bring 2 packs. One pack ain't enough. We put Littlefeather in charge of getting da gummies and he only brought one dang pack. He thought we were bullshetting him but he ain't doubting the power of sour anymore!!!

Good solid post Lynn! Thanks for putting in the time to research. One thing I can tell ya is to make sure you salt your gummie if your's is the unsalted kind. Them suckers won't touch it unless its salty! As far as the saliva thing goes, I now understand why Tom spits on his gummie before deployment. He obviously didn't explain the importance of this tactic. thumb

In actuality, there's nothing wrong with having a little fun, when you come across a bait that does great. It is a fun way to share about with others. I personally would not have gone out & bought 3 bags of these gummy worms (for future research) if I thought I was just being slimed (BS-ed). As you know, it seems the BlueCats line up to just jump on Tom's hooks. It seems to be looking up for El Gato, as well. I have not followed Littlefeather as much, as for now. But if these 3 went catfishing together, and Tom grabbed Littlefeather, that tells me it must have been a good one. Especially if it was boiling water like a washing machine. I know the power of the brutes, especially big Ops, that boil water. If you are unprepared, they can take you out of a boat super fast. I learned my lesson well in July 1985.

My buddy's used to make fun of my rattling catfish rigs yrs ago and now lots of guys run em. In another 5 yrs half the bluecat fisherman will be running some type of gummy product either with their bait or straight gummy! Tom took 3 gummy worms and let them desolve in the shad bag. Would they have hit a straight piece of shad? Probably but They damn sure hit that gummy bait! Whatever puts more fish in the boat! I learn a couple new tricks every time I fish with ol Tom.
