Trying to decide between Helix 12 or Helix 9 MEGA SI G2N, is it worth downsizing to get newer technology?

Hebrew 12:1b let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Probably get better response if you post this in General Equipment Discussion section.

I have the Gen1 (non Mega) Helix 12 at the bow and I am getting great images. I have the Solix 12 Mega at the console which is where the Helix 12 was located. The images are not far off between the two.
You can also get great deals on the Helix 12 Gen1 at this time.

I considered that Tom, but I am mostly interested in what the Crappie folks have to say. I am trying to learn all I can from some of these guys.

I have a Helix 12 SI MEGA. Love it. But I would keep it on 455 or 800 kHz before
I would go to a Helix 9 MEGA just to have the MEGA high frequency. The MEGA is "nice"
but to be blunt it's more "for show than for go". I could get along fine without using it.

Bottom line. The 12 inch screen is MUCH more valuable than having 1.2 MHz frequency on
a 9 inch screen.

The best price i found on Helix 12 MEGA was at Tackle Warehouse. $2024. But you
have to call and ask about the 15% discount. It's not on the website. The Helix 12 SI
would also be discounted a similar percentage.

good fishing, Chris

There is absolutely no comparison. MEGA is amazing! Chris Webbs guide service and I are best buds. He bought the helix 10. I bought the MEGA... After a day in my boat he went back to his and kept adjusting it! He soon realized it was the MEGA. We buy our stuff from David at shut up and fish.
I normally don't post because opinions are... well you know. Chris got the 12 MEGA and swears it changed his life. On cedar creek you can count the fish and tell which way they are pointing. Amazing technology! They finally came out with a graph that works great in the conditions a crappie fisherman needs...shallow! Chris has both on his boat. A 10" at the trolling motor and a 12 MEGA at the console! It won't make them bite but it sure helps you find them! Good luck !

Don't get me wrong, the Mega unit is a fantastic unit. Not downing the term "weekend angler" but the non Mega units are still top quality and can be dialed in to see and find structure not to mention great on the budget. Now if you are a tournament angler, a guide or your budget simply allows it then I would recommend the Mega unit.

MEGA can produce images that border on art. It will make you tend to forget that
you are using a sonar instrument and not something photographic. I enjoy having it
in the toolbox.

But this is also true --

The MEGA SI units have 455 kHz, 800 kHz, and 1200 kHz Imaging and their CHIRP ranges also.

As I stated in the BBC link, I use 455 kHz for fishing due to the wider coverage.

I don't fish for crappie, but I see them a lot. Comparison of 455 kHz with an ONIX and 1200 kHz CHIRP with a SOLIX of the same school:
