Hello, I have a Shimano Spirex 4000 Front Drag reel. It was the first "real" fishing reel I bought, saved up and bought it when I was 10 years old. The reel is a 1996 model I bought in February of 1997. Its been a great reel for many years and still is, but the bail no longer opens and closes like it should. I dug into it a little last night and found the bail spring(PN-3733) and the bail spring guide(a) (PN-3681) are broken. The part numbers were from the box and manual that came with the reel.

I looked online but all the parts I find are for the new model spirex and are different and I don't know if they would work or not. If anyone has any suggestions of where to get these parts I would appreciate any feedback. I love the reel and would like to get it back on the water.

Thanks,
Matt

First of all I would try and call Shimano. If they don't stock it anymore, there are 1/2 dozen + reel replacement part place on line. If you can't fine it there. I would search e-bay for a used reel like the one you have and strip it for parts.

Ok thanks, I will try that. Shimano doesn't list it on their site, but I have not called. I looked at one site this morning other than shimano's and the parts were listed as discontinued.

Well a good report for Shimano!

I called their 800 number and got a representative. The do not stock the spring, part number 3733 any more and couldn't get one, but I think I can reuse the old one with some effort. They had one of the Bail spring guides in stock and offered to ship it free of charge.

Thank you Shimano cheers

Many times, depending on the complexity of the spring, with a little ingenuity, you can make one yourself. I have done that many times, although not perfect, it makes the reel work. Glad it worked out for you.
