A lot of times I hear people talk about hardwoods, cedars and bois d arc. For me a cedar tree is easy to identity but I'm not sure how to distinguish the different between a bois d arc and a hardwood. Can someone give me some pointers on what the differences are and how to be able tell the difference in the two?

I am not a tree expert but If you`ve ever seen a tree that has the BIG Green bubble looking fruit hanging from it you have seen a Bois D arc tree. Growing up we use to call them "Horse Apples". The wood from this tree is the extremely hard, used to make fence post way back in the day & not a favorite of the Termite. As far as "Hard Wood" trees go, there are just too many to name try a google search.

And if your lookin for sompin to make condos out of, cheap and most available is a good place to start. Willow isn't hard and wont last all that long, but for some reason crappie will go to it more than others. Kinda like huntin over an oat patch or a wheat patch... thumb

I guess to be more specific how do you tell the difference between the two in the water. I know a Bois d arc is a horse apple tree but the fruit no longer grows on those trees once they become inundated in water. I can easily tell the difference between the two outside the water just by looking a the big fruit they produce.

No way to tell unless it`s partially submerged. Then if you`ve seen one before you`ll have an idea what you `re looking at. 2cents

The two things that I've notived are the Bois D Arc trees are the ones still intact above the water line, the hardwoods will be broken off near the water line a lot of times, and if you see a little twig on the tree and think you will be able to snap it off with your hand - you won't be able to on the Bois D Arc because its too stout.

I told my boss I wouldn't be in today, I got my arm in a cast!!!

I have spent most of my life fishing. . . the rest I've just wasted.

Since the Bois d Arc tree wood is so dense (it will dull a chainsaw blade), the smaller branches may still be intact. Most any other tree, only the main part of the tree is left. That's the most obvious, but it depends on how many years they are submerged. If it is a flooded "forest" of "pole" timber, (Palestine), it is most likely hardwoods.

SWAG - after ~10 years submerged, there may be branches of hardwoods still intact [Ray Bob] and smaller trees visible, after ~20+ years the only trees with branches will most likely be Bois D Arcs. Also, even the smaller bois d arcs will be standing.
In Lake Lavon (~50 years) about the only trees left standing are bois d arcs.
Love them! The "branchier", the better. lol

Hope this helps.
Good luck out there!
