I know it's old but have a couple questions about it.

What did they do wrong and how to prevent it?

If memory serves me, and I could be wrong here, something went wrong with their steering and he couldn't turn the wheel.

Service you boat and check it might help. But mechanical failures happen.

They lost their hydraulic steering and the motor cocked hard right

They said they lost the steering but you can see the wheel jerk in the video. He was trimmed up to high. Went over the wake and the prop lost it's bite and dropped the nose and the boat spun around. The hard turn sent the steering arm hard against the stop nut and broke it.

Should have stayed in it. When he dropped power the nose hooked. They claim mechanical failure but pictures never surfaced.

Definitely bow hooked. That's probably what broke the steering.

Interesting that several boats went by without stopping. I'm assuming they didn't notice two people swimming by their boat.

You have one single 14mm bolt with lock nut connecting your hyd. steering to your outboard. I'll guarantee you that if it fails at high rate of speed the boat will snap right faster than you can react.

Just checked mine (12 yrs. old, no salt water) and noticed corrosion on threads coming thru lock nut. Will be replacing it immediately!

They said it was a hydraulic steering malfunction and it allowed the motor to turn hard with no control at the wheel to stop it.
