I have a 96 Mercury 150 XR6. It starts and idles good at the beginning, but after awhile it won't start unless I open the throttle and even this is getting harder to start. When I get it started and put into gear I have to give it throttle right away or it will die. Any ideas on how to diagnose this? I've tried squeezing fuel primer this doesn't help.Spark plugs were replaced last season.

Do you run Ethanol in it?

Yes most stations around here have some ethanol in the unleaded gas.

Mine has been getting hard to start and sometimes will die when you give it a little throttle. I ran 2 cans of sea foam into it and it's clearing up now.

Find one that doesn't and you'll be happier. I'll wager it's gummy worms in your carbs or injectors.

For carbs, Take 'em off, spray them out thouroughly, every jet, nook and cranny, with carb cleaner (or soak in bucket style) and reassemble. It takes about an hour for 3 carbs.

If you haven't done this in a few years may as well buy a carb gasket kit and change all the carb gaskets/needles/floats while you're at it.

For injectors I'm not 100% sure but I think running sea foam is all you can do (short of replacing them) and hope it clears the jets up after a few tanks.

Ethanol and 2 stroke engines do not play well together. Newer 2 strokes have internals that will accommodate up to 10% and calibrations that are good for up to 10% but anymore ethanol than that can and will cause damage. 4 stroke engines are different story. 2 strokes have oil in the gas and ethanol and oil do not mix well and if the gas is going bad it makes it even worse. ALWAYS run some sort of fuel treatment in a 2 stroke's gas tank. Check the warranty info of the engine. Running anything over 10% ethanol may void the warranty. Harley Davidson motorcycles will void your warranty for running E15 for example.
Carbed motors cannot self adjust like EFI can and EFI can only self adjust so far since injectors are a fixed size like the jets in a carb are. The more ethanol which is an oxygenator the leaner the fuel mixture will be and at some point it will burn pistons or gald cylinders especially in a carbed 2 stroke.
Currently there are no 2 stroke engines made by anyone for any use that are capable of using more than 10% ethanol.
