How is fishing offshore right now? If its calm and the stars line up, Im going to try and go offshore out of Freeport in a couple of weeks. I only have a 22 ft boat so I have to stay in close. Can anyone tell me how far out the closest rigs to catch Snapper maybe? Also how far out are any of the shrimp boats? Thank you for any information or help you can provide. If you want to through in a place to catch fish within 25 miles from the jetties that would be great too!!

what's happening lately is wind. that & a 22' boat is typically not fun.
also, what's happening now, fishing-wise, will most likely be entirely different
from what's happening when you get there in 2 weeks.
you don't need rigs to catch snappers anymore, they're everywhere. TPWD has a few new wrecks,
Hilton has installed a lot of Pyramids on the bottom up & down the coast.
shrimpers were all over the place last week., Ck. A.I.S. to get a good idea where the majority are before you head down.
do your homework, develop some good #'s to check, & fish.
You can't know if you don't go.........

Made it out and back. Caught our limit on snapper and king fish. Going to go back at the end of August if weather holds up. Caught a buch of sharks and the line stayed tight most of the time. cheers

Just got back from Port Oconnor. It is not freeport but it is fishing great. Limits of snapper in the 18 to 23 " range about 20 to 30 miles out. King fish too. Very fun. The water was almost glass last sunday about 30 miles out! Can not wait to go back. Lost a dorado and had some big stuff break off and break good rods. Very fun!

I only fish on days that end in Y!

My buddy has a 24ft bay boat that we wanted to also try to take 10-15 miles offshore next weekend out of Freeport or Galveston. It's his first boat and is new to offshore fishing and my experience is growing up in the Northeast doing a lot of inshore and offshore fishing in a 33ft Blackfin Sportfish, which is completely different type of boat. He has all the proper safety gear to do the trip and I've got some old Penn 114 reels with 40# mono to troll around with and some lighter jigging rods to jig or drift with but don't know what species are around or what they enjoy eating.

Is trolling even an option and what do most guys use? (daisy chains with small tuna clones or squid, hex heads, diving lures?) I've also read most people hang out by the rigs and bounce live shrimp, squid, or bait fish off the bottom with some light lead or they just let it free float sometimes.

Any help would be appreciated and if anyone want to give any overused locations away I'd be thankful and hopefully find some new ones along the way.

I always ask myself first...."How's the weather gonna be when I wanna go out". Summer storms can pop up darn fast. Make a Float Plan...stay in touch with family and be prepared for the worst. This is NO fishing report for sure, just a heads up. The Galveston Daily News has offshore reports daily.
