Bought my boat in South Carolina where they don't register trailers.
Moved to Texas and trying to register trailer here. GVW rating is 3500.

1: Called Denton County and was told to bring bill of sale + form 130-U.

2: Got to tax office and was told I also need Manufacturers Certificate of Origin, which I don't have.

3: Called Denton County AGAIN and they said, no, you need a weight ticket with the trailer empty.

So before I try to figure out a way to drop my boat at the lake and take trailer to be weighed - does anyone know if this is even correct?
After three different stories from three different people I'm not feeling super confident.

Thanks.

Not sure why they want empty weight, if it was me. I would get it weighed loaded and empty. The GVWR is what is used for registering. Bill of Sale should be sufficient. If it is a brand new trailer you should have gotten a certificate of origin. Have you talked to the dealer you bought it from?

Unfortunately you are at the mercy of the tax office. I would do as suggested above and weight the whole rig. Also take a picture of the rig, mainly the trailer, they will eventually want to know the color of trailer. If the rig weighs over 4000 the it will fall into a different category and will have to be state inspected. Most of the hassle is because of theft I think but they are really hard to deal with at times. Good luck. b

They want to know what your trailer is weighted for. Many manufacturers now have a statement of weight that they will email or send to you if you will contact them. It saves having to get teh weight done. If you need it weighed, any DOT weigh station at a truck stop will do it.

I got a used boat trailer about 3 years ago to make into a kayak trailer. I went to the tax office in Fairfield with the bill of sale, they asked if it had any mfg. plate or other ID. I told them the truth that were no markings of any kind and it looked like it was painted with cheap house paint with a broom. They asked if would be over a certain gross weight (I think 3500#) I said no and left with plates for a shop built boat trailer. I finally finished the conversion and picked up 2 new kayaks today.

All depends on county office and person working. It's stupid, but boils down to trailers over 2500# have to be titled. That's why they want mfg plate or certificate of origin. I've gone round and round about the absurdity of weighing empty trailer. IMO, go get it weighed with boat on it. It'll come in over 2500# and just get it titled. Might cost you an extra 25/50 for title. Just don't tell them you weighed it with boat. And they won't allow you to just claim it weighs over 2500#. Lawmakers at their finest.

They all do it differently and chances are, if they have several employees, they will each have their own interpretation of what is required. I've had them just ask me if it was over a certain weight. I said no and boom it was done. I'd go in and talk to them and see if you can talk your way into getting it done with what you have. It's crazy to expect you to store a boat off of a trailer and drive the trailer to have it weighed. Who made your trailer? Try calling them and see if they can send you something.

Walked into a different tax office this morning with the exact same paperwork as before, and walked out 15 minutes later with a registered trailer.

THIS "They asked if would be over a certain gross weight (I think 3500#) I said no and left with plates for a shop built boat trailer." It works for manufactured trailers also...two boats and not problems
