All this talk about brookies leads me to post a picture of a brookie my brother caught back in CO about 3 years ago. He was elk hunting on the Grand Mesa a little southwest of Collbran, CO and decided to spend an afternoon on one of the lakes near the camp. This was a lake my late father always liked to fish during elk season when he got to the point he couldn't hike the hills for a bull. He went on the trip every year to do a little fishing, be the camp cook and just hang with the guys.

My brother didn't have a scale with him so he laid a stick next to this fish and cut it to the length on it. When he got to camp me measured it. The stick was just shy of 23 inches long and my brother guessed the brookie weighed between 4 and 5 lbs! That my friends is a whale of a brook trout. My brother couldn't bring himself to keep the fish since Dad always fished for a big brookie there. He kind of figured it was Dad's fish so he released it to fight another day. I doubt he ever catches a bigger one in CO. Before I left the state I fished hard for brookies nearly every weekend and the biggest I ever got was 19 inches.
