Is it worth it? Is it actually cheaper than buying stock rods in the store?

Depends on what kind of rods you are buying in the store. You won't be able to beat the price of an ugly stick or lightning rod by building yourself, not by much if any at all, but you should be able to build cheaper than the $200+ rods from bass pro or the like. And you'll definitely be able to build a custom rod cheaper than you can buy one from a builder (assuming you can build as well as they can). None of the above accounts for your time though.

The real advantage I see is being able to choose the components used and set the rod up the way you want it vs the way someone else thinks it should be.

Beware though, it is very addicting. I liken it to reloading ammo. While your unit cost may go down a bit and the quality improves, the amount you do, load, build will increase, so in the end you'll spend more. Or I do at least. But I have the satisfaction of knowing I did it myself, and that's worth more than money to me at times.

Not sure it's cheaper but you get what you want.
I had kvs, a member on this forum build me an awesome rod but the parts alone plus blank put me around $300 for just parts. It all depends on whatyou want.
Kevin built me one hell of a top end rod but the parts were not cheap.
If you need someone to build the rod, his work is unrivaled. Plus the dude is quick.
He built me a 8'10 sw1088 rainshadow blank with all fuji K guides and fuji plate seat. Every little thing adds up.
If you go custom, might as well go all out. If not, stick to st croix avid, legends or ALX rods

I am a reloader. I have been reloading for about 7 years now and I enjoy that type of stuff. I think I will give a go at some point. I was just curious about some opinions from people who have done it.

They always said reloading was cheaper but I spent way more reloading that I ever did before... Mainly because I shoot more rounds now. laugh

I started this about two years ago because I was repairing my own rods. I have now built two rods from the ground up and must say there is nothing like using your own rods to fish with. Is it cheaper? Not sure depends on what you are currently using.

Not cheaper and a warning....once you start building your own it's extremely hard to go back to buying cookie cutter rods off the shelf.

Not to steal the thread, but for those of you that do build rods, how did you learn? I'm really interested in learning how to build rods but know nobody that does!

If your building higher end rods comparable to the $250+ rods you get off the shelf it'll probably take 4 or 5 rods built to break even after buying the tools for rod drying, thread wrapping, supplies, etc.. It's a good way to get exactly what you want out of a hobby.
Some blanks have good warranties but you will still be rebuilding if you break one. The warranty is a lot of what you pay for on store bought.

Cut Rate or FTU off I45 and Fuqua (South Houston), has seminars and starter classes every now and then. Give them a call.
