 extremely subtle jig bite

yesterday I was pitching a jig and I got a bite, only I didn't feel the bite at all, I just happened to look down to see my line heading out of the brush, missed the hookset, for those of you who have more experience with a jig when you get a bite like that how often is it a bass? just want to know if I missed a bass or some other fish, thanks in advance and tight lines

Almost for sure it was a bass. They suck the bait in as it falls so you don't "feel" anything and then just swim out. For me it happens a lot with bigger soft plastics as well like a brush hog. I "line watch" like crazy!!

I line watch too. One other thing. If you know the depth and how long your bait takes to hit bottom, you should be able to tell when it stops falling but hasn't made it to the bottom yet. When that happens, SET THE HOOK. Some of my biggest jig fish have bit like this.

it was extremely shallow water, less than 3ft

awesome that tells me I did something right I just got into flipping and pitching crazy thing is he bit on a small 1/4oz jig that was black and blue with a watermelon black flake zoom chunk that I think I dipped in spikeit chartreuse

I've had catfish do the same thing. You can usually tell when a bluegill is picking at your bait.

I often wonder how many times something similar happens to me flipping deeper water. This past weekend we were flipping trees on Ray Bob in 15-20' of water. I'm sure I missed a bite or two on the fall and never even knew it......

I've been on a great jig bite over the last 6 weeks, it's been from a crushing bone jarring bite to tap tap tap tap (bluegill) to just swim away with it. The swim away bite has been my favorite, they usually over 6 pounds

Happened to me last week end; I never felt it hit bottom, reeled in a bit and didn't feel anything... I crossed his eyes. I believe he picked it up on the fall and was swimming towards me.

Early spring crappie do that. I caught some Donkey crappie flipping jigs. Spots are bad about just picking up a piece and swimming off with them too

Mono, Fluorocarbon or Braid, when a fish picks up a bait like that you will never feel it.

Imo....when u don't feel a bite with a jig, it's almost always a good fish....
