My wife is out trying to help me get a tag for my trailer. We live in Denton county and the place she went in Gainesville said we have to get a trailer weight without the boat in order to get a tag. We just moved here from out of state. Is this correct?

No that is not correct.

How much is your trailer registered for? GVWR? If that number is over 4500 lbs you need to get it inspected before you can get a tag. If it is less than 4500 then you can just go buy a tag.

If there isn't a weight on the registration you will need to have it weighed with the boat on it, and if how much it weighs exceeds 4500 lbs you need to get it inspected before you can get it tagged.

That is how you legally do it.

What kind of boat and trailer is it? If it is a factory built trailer it should have a GVWR(gross vehicle weight rating) tag on it somewhere and if not you can contact the manufacturer and they can tell you.

She shouldn't have gone to Gainesville (cooke county) were in Denton County. They don't require that but they have a form called the br 141 or something like that to fill out (which I cannot find). Flying by the seat of my pant's on this one. Nothing in Texas seems to come easy...!!

I just registered one from La.. Any time you bring a vehicle or trailer in from another state you have to get it inspected. Number 2 if there is no weight listed on other state's title or registration then you have to weigh it. I went to register mine and thought I had all in order.i was more concerned with no weight on La title so I asked lady if I needed to weigh. She said no just inspection. Went back with inspection and guess what. They need weight. I was pod because I had just hauled boat back from Hubbard right past scales at Love. I had to go him hook up boat and haul back to loves. Boat and trailer in at 4620. I thought just my luck because I was hoping to be under 4501. That 45 gallons of gas did me in. I got my title this week and all it has on it is trailer weight of 1750. The spot for carrying/gross is blank. Will see what happens when registration expires in June. They mede me give them boat, motor, and gear weights. I could have just lumped it all if I had known what they wanted in the end.

I called the tax office which has a Lewisville number (thought called the crossroads office) and they said all I needed was to fill out the VRT-141 form. Which the first question is trailer weight. The guy I talked to said that I didn't need to have the weight. But I guess I could call BC and ask them. I thought the inspection applied to bigger setups than mine. Any way my wife will be going the office in crossroads and I'm sure they will want something else that we won't have. Jeeze!!

Inspection applies to ALL vehicles from out of state that are being registered in Tx. regardless of weight. I had a filled out 141 but I hit a snag when there was no weight on La title. If your out of state title has weight you can skip that part. Total cost was $162.75 which included $62.50 of sales tax. As long as you proof ownership you will not have to pay tax.
