What makes a jig a flipping jig?
Weight, size, hook. skirt?

The style of head, first and foremost. Then I would say the hook, and after that I would say the weed guard.

My jigs that I make starts with the line tie for flipping heavy cover.
- It is recessed bringing the jig up and through the cover without any hang ups.
- The head is slightly tapered and smooth on the sides. I do not want any contours that stick out on the sides like most fish head models to be catching on limbs or grass.
- It has flat eye sockets that also do not stick out or have the high spot on the front edge. This allows it to be streamline and slick.
- These features will also allow the jig to be skipped under docks and over hangs with no contour resistance when it slides across the surface.

Head style is most important (arkie or grass head) followed by the right hook, big heavy duty 5/0 and 6/0 hooks. A solid 50-60 strand skirt. I understand that using the rubber band material for skirt making is easier and less time consuming than hand tying skirts...but Curtis you need to hand tie...the jigs will last forever and you can always add a rubber band with rattle chambers after. Also if you can manage a wire keeper instead of the traditional keeper for trailers would be awesome, but thats me just being picky and trying to save some trailers and superglue.

There's gonna be a lot of different answers on this one. Here what works for me. If I m pitching, flipping, and punching Grass with a Jig I really like a jig vertical line tie and a narrow head design Strike King Greg Hackney Hack Attack Jig or Dirty Jigs No-Jack punching They seem to really come threw the grass pretty well. As far as weight I fish just heavy enough to penetrate threw the grass. All the way up to an ounce and quarter to an ounce and a half for super thick mats! For a ligter and smaller grass Jigs I like the Bigsby Flipping Jig by strike King it comes as small as a 1/4 ounce with a heavy wire hook! (I love putting this Jig in holes that are in and around thick mats) that 1/4 ounce has a super slow fall and is deadly in the heat of the summer! When it comes to flipping and pitching wood I like an Arky and a football head style Jig they seem to hang up less when your fishing wood. When fishing wood I like using the lightest Jig I can get away with. As far as hook size Remember we are in Texas.... so I don't fish any Jig that as a light wire hook. That's just what works for me!

Flipping jigs are designed to go into the heaviest wood or brush and come out unscathed. Flipping jigs are usually 3/8 to 1 ounce, and have a stout, heavy gauge hook. The ideal head shape should be something compact, preferably with a recessed line tie. The weed guard on a flipping jig should also be a little firmer than other jig types, as it�s got to prevent the jig from hanging up. Rattles are also a big benefit when flipping a jig, and the best models feature an integrated rattle.
