When my Grandfather passed away years ago I asked to keep a few things of his that had meaning to me.
No one in my family argued.
I spent countless days on this creek that ran through the town I grew up in and the farm my grandparents owned with my "Pawpaw"(as we called him) loading up stringers of channel cats with him using beef liver.
Id give anything to sit and talk with that man on one of those creek banks again. When times were more simple.

This rod has been around for as long as I can remember, and has had several 33s through it. Probably worn out cause he spooled it with 40 lb test mono.
His reels were always greased up with Marvel Mystery Oil.
I even remember when he broke the tip off shutting the rod in his tailgate and didn't want to spend 5 bucks to replace it at the bait shop so he found a broke in half rod of mine, cut the smallest guide off and glued the heck out of it.

And that red Sears Roebuck tackle box went everywhere. I don't even want to clean it out.

To be sappy, going through all my junk today brought me back to my youth and so many other memories. I have this rod on my rack with all the other "fancy" ones as my grandfather would have called them so I can remember every chance I get.
I urge you folks to think back to where you began. Our world today moves so fast and something as simple as fishing where an old man and a boy sitting on a creek bank can be easily forgotten.
If you have kids take em out doing something. If you dont have kids Im sure there is some where some way you can find some that you can take.
Enjoy the rest of your weekends.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he will be broke for the rest of his life.

Wonderful memories. I had 5 grandfathers and great grandfathers alive when I was young. They all took me fishing. That beginning was so important to me.
Thanks for sharing.

Great post. I have a bunch of old rods and reels I've collected over the years and would like to hear the stories they could tell. I didn't get to fish with my grandfathers but my dad and my grandmother passed the love of the outdoors on to me and I have done the same with my son and now my grandchildren. Thanks for sharing.

Luckily I was allowed to have my papa's old rod and reels. A couple are old fiberglass ones with guides missing. We used them for catfishing and bass on local stock tanks when I was young. I'd rather have him but I have the memories along with the rods. I would love to have the jitterbug I pierced the lobe of my left ear with while fishing with him one day. He never let me forget what a baby I was about it making him take me to the ER to get it out and costing him $35.
Thanks Papa!

My grandpa pasted 32 years ago. I got his old rod and reel. It sits near my front door as if it's ready to go fishing. Still rigged the way he left it..

Awesome post Tall Hat! Neither one of my two grandfathers fished so I didn't get the bug from them. You are a Blessed Man to have been able to spend time with him, however short the time might have been.
