In two weeks I'll be heading to Louisiana for a guided fishing trip with my brother. We are going out with Capt. Bailey Short of Southern Flats Louisiana Fly Fishing and targeting redfish primarily. I won a nice Orvis waterproof boat/fly box a few months ago at the Fly Fishing Film Festival that I hadn't used yet, so I figured I would start tying some saltwater flies and put it to use. I am tying way more flies than we will use and I am not finished yet, but since my brother lives in Baton Rouge and has a flats skiff he takes out fly fishing fairly often, I will just leave most of them with him so he can use them after I come back to Texas.

I have been tying since last September so while I know they are not presentation worthy, I think they look good enough to catch fish.

Crab Flies

Nick Vlahos' Fighting Blue Crab

Doug McKnight's ER Crab (found it on YouTube)
The body is furry foam but it is glued together with a flexible adhesive so it is not rigid.

Pattern I came up with using Fly Tyer's Dungeon Sand Crab dubbing and zonker strips

Shrimp Patterns

EP Spawning Shrimp

Drew Chicone's Disco Shrimp

Gurglers: These have rattles in them and the tail is made of coyote, which I really like the looks of.

Seaducer variant

Baitfish/Miscellaneous

Bissett's Cajun Crustacean - designed by a Louisiana-based guide, Lucas Bissett. Also have some tied with dumbbell eyes.

Bissett's Mudbug - designed by the same person as the above fly

Tarpon Toad

Nice selection. It's always fun to learn and tie new patterns, for a new kind of fishing. Good luck on your trip!

Thanks. I am really enjoying tying. I fish flies I personally tied 99.99% of the time now and catching fish with them is really rewarding.

I'd say you got every angle covered with that assortment of flies. Shouldn't have any problem hooking up and you are certainly right about catching fish on flies you tied, there's nothing better!

Tie up some cajun crustaceans in purple and yellow. All the redfish in south Louisiana are LSU fans. Actually the purple and yellow is a real hot combo in the marsh. That blue crab looks awesome. All of them look really good, I'd be proud of them. Good luck on your trip.

I've noticed they sell a lot of the redfish flies in purple and gold so I will tie some up. Everyone and everything in that state is crazy about LSU, no reason the fish shouldn't be also.

You might think about tying a few with weed guards. Grass and oysters can cause you some grief.

Well, the trip got rained out and rescheduled for September, so I am going to have to wait a bit longer to see how the flies work.

Well at least you'll get time to tie up more flies!

careful with the flat one's. I ties a foam frog out of a couple of circles of craft foam. helicoptered (spun) so bad when cast that it buzzed at it went past my head. ruined my tippet and leader. the only positive was that it would flip on the surface a couple of times when it landed.
