What do you all use for brands and types? Are they worth it? I don't know if i would use it much other than on cranks/jigs etc.

thanks

I have the retractable rod type with the large hook groove and the small hook grove on the other side.

Here is the one I use, but it is an older model. I have heard good feedback about the Lansky one, too.

And the Lansky one:

It looks like the Lansky would be harder to use, unless you grabbed the hook with a pair of pliers, but what do I know. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Fish hook sharpener changed my fishing... just a cheap file looking one I got on Amazon but holy heck does it help. Use it on everything.

I watched 10 pages of ways to sharpen a hook on YouTube. Have you looked at all the ways? Most will shorten the life of the hook.
Just make sure you get a Diamond grade sharpener with the hook grove. It does the best job for me. I stroke the hook and not the sharpener. Lightly drag the hook backwards away from the point of the hook from the under side where the barb is. Two strokes and it is as sharp as it is going to get; unless someone has messed with it. Then it may take a couple of strokes on each side in the same direction.

The only video that I saw that even came close to sharpening the hook from the under side, was a guy that dulled the hook exactly the way most were sharpening the hook. He then took a Dremel tool from the under side, in the bend of the hook with the little sander wheel spinning away from the point making a quick touch and it was razor sharp.

I just use a battery operated Dremel on mine. Works great and it's fast.

Yellow handled file. Be careful not to heat the tips of yor hooks with that dremmel tool. Changes the tempering of the steel and can result in broken or bent hook points.

Get you a small Arkansas whetstone to carry with you.
Best I've ever found to put a point on a hook and get back to fishing.

Cut with her golden oars the silver stream,
And greedily devour the treacherous bait.
