on a baitcaster reel. How do you set your reel up? I have gotten better with a spinning reel but when I pick up the baitcaster for heavy stuff seems all I am doing is picking out backlashes.

The way i have done it is set mag to max. Tighten fine tuning press the thumb release let the bait free fall to the floor fine tune it till it will hit floor and the line drum will stop at that point.

^^Im with James. Those brakes are good and all, but solid thumb control will give you more consistent results. partyon

At first... mag brakes high like 80%, 50% on spool tension. Start getting the feel and back both off slowly. You cant skip FAR without it being light. Well... you can but you gotta but a LOT more on the cast and tgat tends to be when you get jacked

Braid or lighter line help a lot...

There is no magic bullet for everyone, each person is going to do it different, there are a bunch of videos on YouTube for you to watch, and you'll soon see that most all of the pros skip different from one another, some say all brake, others say no brake, just thumb control, with that being said, i do it like Andy Montgomery, even bought a Tatula with the T-Wing, works pretty well for "me".

Best advice i can give you, take your skipping rod and hit the lake, find a cove that's pretty calm and just practice, if you can find some docks to throw at, that's even better, but don't go out with the mindset that you're going to whack them skipping docks that day, you're there to practice and learn, catching a fish that you skipped to is just a plus.

Hope this helps!

Good Luck!

I do t change any settings for skipping that differ from regular fishing. Weedless bigger swimbaits skip waay easy. Technique imo is more important than reel settings.

Loosen spool tension but right before the spool is "too" loose. Don't have too many brakes on and thumb the spool. Let it fly at a low angle and watch it skid across the water or result in a giant backlash. Try again until you have it or just keep skipping senkos on spinning gear.

Don't skip heavy stuff. 1/4 oz is good. 3/8 is about it. 1/2 oz and you won't be learning very quickly.

If you can't find em wind em.

I thought I was getting it figured out when skipping plastics with a 5/16 pegged bullet weight until I tried a heavier combination, a 71/8 inch Stiko with a 1/8 oz bullet. Long story of how I overcame this. Bottom line is that I had to tighten down the reel tension with the heavier lure so it wouldn't plow down into the water on contact. So now It was as before, when the bait approaches the front of the target, feather with thumb while lifting the rod tip and just let the bait slide across the surface.

first advice I would start with is to learn using an arkie head jig or even a lighter football head, the flat bottom will really help the bait skip and prevent a sudden dig which causes disaster in your spool. I learned as a kid on lake conroe with old arkie jigs and progressed from there. btw thanks dad for making me learn to skip on a bait caster not a spinning setup! tough love was def his motto, made me pay for my own spools of line too, lol

What baits do you like best for skipping? For me it has been a 3/8oz. V&M swim jig.

Throw a Biffle bug on an Arkie jig and get to work.

I suffered with backlashwhile skipping until I got the Daiwa Tatula SV.
I have 2 now and made this video. Set it up with spool slack and don't use your thumb at all. It's hard not to use your thumb as a brake but don't.
