Today was my first time to use punch bait.
It worked great and my wife and I caught 50 fish in a couple of hours.
My only problem was that after a while the hook was plugged up with cotton.
So much so that the barbs were buried in it.
I pulled with pliers and used a knife to whittle enough away to keep fishing but at the end of the day we tossed the hooks.

Is there a way to remove the cotton ?
Thanks
Buff

I use punch bait all the time and I was wondering the same thing because usually when a hook gets all that onit I throw the hook back in my tackle box as is or throw the hook away and use a brand New hook the next time because I like my hooks to be as sharp as possible when I fish.

If the punch bait makers would go back to cattail fuzz instead of cotton/pillow fiber then it wouldn't build up on the hook.

I just use a pair of scissors and cut it off if I can't pull it off.

Hooks are too cheap to mess with all that. Just tie a new one on.

I use Big Marv's and he always uses cat tails in his mixture.
When I fish with the bait I find a stick branch lying on the ground or break off a dry stick from shore line brush to use as a dip stick.
After I finish fishing I scrape off the excess of the bait on the stick onto the inside lip of the jar. I then place the hook on the lip of the jar and using the dip stick I pull the excess off the hook back into the jar.
Seems like it's too much trouble, but not when you wish you had that little bit of bait left in that jar and the fish are biting.
I lose too many hooks on the bottom where the fish are to have the luxury of cutting off the hook, but if you have plenty it's your call.

I didn't say to leave it on the bank, or in somebody's yard. Throw them away.

Burn it off with a cigarette lighter, maybe?

Best way I've found to clean it off is cut the hook off, throw it in the trash and tie on a clean hook. Repeat as needed.
