Actually there were two firsts. I finally got down to the bay with my kayak, so first saltwater kayak excursion. Now, I'm not new to salt water fishing but I have never caught a saltwater fish with a flyrod.

I launched my kayak at daybreak and paddled across the bay to a grassy shoreline and started watching for redfish. I noticed two working down the bank from my left so I dropped the anchor and waited for them to work down the bank. The redfish finally showed himself in front of me so I started casting. Third cast I hooked up and all hell broke loose. The red came past my kayak as it headed out and I could see that it was 30+. He got me into the backing twice and when I finally got him up to the boat he got wrapped around my anchor rope and asta la vista baby. Should of pulled up that danged anchor. It took me five minutes to tie on another fly my hands were shaking so bad. Holy cow. Anyhow, a few minutes later I spotted the grass moving about a bit and tossed the fly to the spot and we were off to the races again. This one didn't get me into the backing but turned out to be a respectable 25" red. My first saltwater fish, and a redfish no doubt, on a fly rod. I caught a couple of more small ones and had one pretty nice speck on for a few moments before he shook the fly out. I'm afraid my bass fishing days may be scaled back a bit. This was hoot.

This is the fly that was doing all the good. A little chartreuse craft fur, sparkly purple ep brush, and some silly legs.

Awesomeness. Redfish fever. Those shallow water reds know how to pull.
