I'm loading stuff in my truck at Lowes. Some guy pulled up in a slick 4x4 and started running some story about he owns a Home Theater Store and had an extra TV or something. Even before he started talking I thought wonder what scam this is. I let him know I wasn't interested and he left and headed to the next guy in the parking lot.

I would imagine he was trying to peddle a box with bricks in it or a TV with no guts, no telling what the scam was.

I've heard of VCR scams like this, but this was the first I'd heard of for a TV. No telling how many scams these guys have.

I had this happen at a gas station. Relocating some entertainment business and need to offload some tvs they couldn't fit. I figured they were stolen and said no Thanks and went my way.

I remember this like it was yesterday, I was about 5 years old and we were visiting relatives in Detroit. My uncle wanted to go the the store to get some stuff, so me and my dad went along. As we were walking out, a man approached my uncle and said he had a nice tv for sale. We walked over to his white van and he opened the back doors. There was a nice tv out of the box, and another in a box. He was selling the one in the box, my uncle opened, looked at the tv and said "we'll take it". We get back to his place, we are all happy thinking we just scored, open the box, take tv out, and it rattled. Come to find out, he had an old tv and cleaned it up, and put some bricks in it. I still remember how big my uncles eyes got

Remember when Albertsons was closing years ago? I was walking to my truck from one of those, two guys in a work van pull up by me. And I quote, "Hey man we've got several leftover wedding gifts from my sister's wedding". Turns out they are selling bottles of cologne. After I told them that I'd take a look, they wanted to meet around back. I tell them I'll be around there in a minute. I turned and drove off.

I was getting gas a good while back at a station on I35 and I think it was Inwood or Motor Street in Dallas.
Guy wanted to know If i wanted a really good deal on a Browning Sweet 16. Said for $50 ea. but i had to take the whole case which had 6 shotguns in it. I said let me see one. Next thing he said the owner of the station would call the cops so he didn't have them with them. A buddy had them over at a warehouse in the Irving Blvd industrial district - "just down the street a ways" and i needed to follow him over there. Right.

At the time, i was thinking if it wasn't so far away from my home area, I would have called about 5 of my homeboys to come have some real fun and stalled the guy off till they could get there. In hindsight, i'm really extremely glad that wasn't an option and that I just drove off.

While in college i drove a Jeep CJ-7. It wasn't hard to talk to me at times when i ran around with the top off all the time. I was approached by some guys in a box van about some bad [censored] speakers that were not accounted for on these guys pick up and delivery ticket. They even had some paperwork to show me. I took them to a friends apt. To show them because I didn't have enough money to pay for them and wanted to see if anyone wanted to go in wth me. Fortunately, i was too poor to pay for them.

Now this goes back to the late 80's - so that tells you how long I can remember this scam has been going on.

Back in the 80s, I lived in an apt on Maham@Spring Valley in Dallas. We had all kinds of sales people coming through that complex. Had a guy selling weed door to door and even some guy selling drinking glasses out of his car.

Yeah this type scam has been going on a long time around DFW... I had a friend got ripped off on a nice Kenwood stereo full of bricks but the turntable worked. That was around 1973.

Typically not stolen.
