If you are going to catch fish, get away from the crowds. The park hosts and even the game warden will tell you the fishing is better downstream of that area. I take a kids pole with bobber and small hook with corn to catch all the sunfish and bluegill I need. Set up 1 rod with cut bait, next has live bait and the last 1 or 2 have corn on them for the carp. I'll have to try hiking farther next time. It seemed pretty shallow where I went but I was on the far side of the river.i don't think I was anywhere near the railroad bridge. Do you start on the parking lot side? It begins to get deeper the closer you get to the railroad bridge. Current is slower too.

You were on the right side of the river, you just didn't go far enough. So opposite side of the parking lot but further down river. After a while is there no longer a defined trail? I kind of lost the trail so I turned around last time.

There is defeinitely a trail, you just need to look for it. Looking for peoples footprints can help, it's fairly well traveled still.

Went out a few days ago and caught a couple of decent-sized catfish on raw bacon out at the spot near the railroad bridge. I was on the parking lot side of the river, where there are drop offs and trees on the bank. I'd stopped at a couple of spots that looked good to me on my walk out there and didn't catch anything, so didn't get a whole lot of time at the bridge spot.
Wasn't fishing for them, but saw the backs of what I think were big buffalo or carp bumping up out of the water around a sunk log on that side. They definitely weren't gar.
Are there bass to be fished for in this area? I picked up a kiddie rod to drop balls of bread in for live bait but all I caught was a softshell. Thinking of giving artificials a shot (never tried 'em in freshwater) but don't want to waste my time casting into a bass ghost town.

I had one little bass chase a spinner to the bank out there a few days ago, but I've tried different artificials with no luck out there in the late afternoon/early evening. I'm pretty new to bass fishing so I dunno if it's operator error or what -- trying to figure out if there's somewhere else in the area worth trying that isn't choked with people.
What's really weird to me is that I have trouble finding brim out there. I had better luck dropping a line in a dirty neighborhood creek in Houston. All I see in the water are those big dopey lookin carp.
