Out of production lures can go for more.
What you may not realize is the individual hand-made detail & attention given to each lure. One of the expensive swimbaits I have is tank-tested and tuned at the factory - for a specific buoyancy at a specific temperature! That time costs money, of course, and it gets magnified between the factory and the consumer.
Roman Made is in Japan, as are a number of the companies that make very expensive lures. Trade tariffs with Japan in particular add considerably to the cost of selling a Japanese product in the USA. This is one of the reasons all the lures from Japan are pricey compared to others not manufactured in Japan.

So do you jump in and retrieve in 30 feet of water. What about a fish that breaks off and swims off with it.

Yeah...Hinkle Shad can go for up to 500. Plenty of videos online of people backlashing the cast and watching their 500 dollar lure snap off and fly out into the lake. Lol. Happens a lot with 5oz plus baits.
High quality large swimbaits are an entire world of their own. Anyone interested I would recommend a video called Southern Trout Eaters. Long but packed with awesome info on Huddleston 6"and 8" baits as well as Triple Trout and a few others.
It's rumored that Butch Brown has caught over 1600 bass over 10#s on swimbaits. There is no doubt that they produce.

Look up the online article where they dissected one of the Roman lures. Having worked with wood for awhile, I don't believe that each one has 12 hours into it unless you count the time it speaks in water and the paint dries.

The weighting and balancing of each one is time consuming. Used to be a video on FB of him making them. Great to watch if it's still up. He is a true master craftsman. Doubt I will ever own one but I admire his work and talent.

I'll never be able to own one and don't fish anywhere that I'd get the full potential out of it but it would be fun to try to make one just to see if I was capable.

$200 Smart Lure So I have a guilty habit of spending money on antique lures and rods and reels. Currently, have a few older lures that I have no idea what they are or who makes/made them but I do feel a couple of them may be worth something. I will gather a few and post them here maybe some of you guys know something I don't. Back to my point, sometimes I see whacky or techy lures online, for example, i have a sonar bobber and a bobber with a camera on it. HaHa I know it's ridiculous but I like gadgets too. My most recent purchase was a lure called the Data Pro lure. It's 200$+ with more features than I know of at the moment. Some of the things I know is it weighs the fish, it reads the temp of water at what ever depth the lure is at, GPS, records video, and I guess the company will do cross country tourneys. I wasn't going to do it but if you preorder it's a 1-time payment. Otherwise, it will be a subscription based thing for access to their cloud, also American made. Lol, I don't know spit about a cloud but my wife reworded it to me in a way it made sense. I'll post a link and you guys tell me how it reads, although it doesn't matter at this point. I'll put some antiques up here today hopefully. LURE that does WEIGHT,GPS,VIDEO,SCALE....
All for God.

Before you spend 400 on a mother you have to send at least that much just for a setup that can actually throw it

I have the Roman Made Negotiator which is a glide bait that I don't think they make anymore, awesome bait and money well spent. I worked at TackleWarehouse for close to 3 years when I lived in CA and I only ever saw 2 of the Roman Made Mother swimbaits get sold. Even the big bait guys in SoCal didn't buy em because they have guys like Andrew Hinkle and others that make far more realistic baits needed to catch the teeners in the highly pressured southern CA lakes.

Cost of anything is relative, there's no deference in someone who makes $ 25,000 a year paying $ 25 a piece for a bait than someone who makes $ 100,000 a year paying $ 400 makes as about as much sense as someone who makes $ 50,000 a year having a $100,000 boat financed for 15 years and a $ 75,000 pickup to pull it with but I know a lot of those guys and they've never fish above a local club level But they work for the money and its there privilege to buy a $ 440 swim bait if they want , I have a couple of $ 40 baits and my biggest bass ever came on a .25c baby brushhog

I tried to help the economy by buying a number of them, but none of mine were over $150 out of pocket. If I manage to catch even just one DD with one of them, I'll consider the expense for all the baits, rods, and reels to have been worth it. I liken it to trophy hunting with a high-end rifle, optics, binoculars, etc., none of which comes cheap either.
