Looking at a boat in Waco later this week but nobody, and I mean nobody has any openings for 2-3 weeks for a compression test/motor scan. What can I do? Is it common to be able to leave with the boat with a contingent offer so I can bring it up north (Dallas area) and have somebody look at it? Is it a really dumb idea to buy a boat without having the motor looked at? TIA.

Have you checked with Marineland in Waco? They are usually pretty good about getting you in quick

Assuming this is an individual you are buying it from, just talk to the guy and see what he's willing to do. It's very common this time of year (or just about any for that matter) for service shops to be working on a big back log. And the concern is really dependent on the age of the boat. I would also ask the guy if he has any service records.

Getting the motor checked is a must, i dont think i would put any money on the table until it was checked.

I wouldn't buy one without a good thorough inspection period.

*BTW, Marineland in Waco's service department is a joke, I wouldn't trust a word they say.

Did you get your compression tester like you said in your other thread ?

Was going to but I was told Mercs are not as straight forward as pulling the top off and removing a spark plug. Several steps were involved. Any experience with that?

You can google "how to test compression on Mercury" which ever one it is. Youtube has lots of video's also. I work on my SHO all the time using youtube.

I would do a compression check, look at the lower unit oil and go run it. If it runs good and he has all the service records, after all that it wouldn't bother me to buy it. Especially if it has warranty and you can add more. But no matter what, it's a toss up as to how long it will last.

Call Marine Outlet in Temple 254-773-9931. Ask for Rick Smith (owner). Let him know your situation. Pretty sure he will help you out.

In my experience its pretty straight forward! Remove the plugs and disconnect the hot wire ( solid red)from your fuel pump then let er rip. Or at least that's the steps I take on the Mercury I own.

Don't over complicate it. Check compression, lower unit oil. Then go run it hard. If it runs fine, buy it. That's a fairly new boat.

T Bird for the win!!! Man, thanks for referring Rick. He called me back and said he could get me in on Thursday when I go take a look at the boat. Thanks a bunch!
