THAT IS ELECTROLYSIS
Something is grounding or sharing power (flowing) through the minerals in the water. Most likely through a positive flow from something. If you have a cranking battery in the loop of trolling be sure the bottom leg ground on the cranking is the trolling loop ground.

That's minimal. You should see what Squaw Creek can do.

Trolling motors batteries are not hooked up to cranking batteries. I took all batteries out when got the boat and cleaned the bilge. You haven't finished looking. The connection can be anywhere the two Grounds can be connected, not just at the batteries in the rear equipment compartment. You've indicated you have looked in one place; there are others. Someone who didn't know what they were doing may have connected a boat battery Ground wire at the bow to the TM in some way (putting a bonding wire under a bolt or nut, for instance). Sometimes people attach a Ground wire from a graph at the bow to the frame of a TM mount, believing this will decrease interference. That's pointless and as GS stated, a very bad move. You'll need to do a close inspection at the bow to truly determine if the two Grounds have been connected. This could be hidden from view, such as inside the bow wiring access port, on the back of the TM receptacle, etc.

Make sure trolling motor and cranking motor share the same ground.
That electrolysis could be coming from another boat parked nearby also.

Nothing is hooked up to the trolling motor receptive. Everyone I get a boat new or old. I always try to go through the tangle of wires and sort out and organize. Didn't see anything out of ordinary. I did have a purple and black(+) and black wire I connected the minn kota heading sensor to.they were just there assuming from the factory for accessories at bow

That is probably where your problem is. Drop those back off and go the other route. Also purchase the newest and greatest trolling motor plug you can get. There is a flat ground plate inside that can go bad but still give connection. You will be able to see it through the clear plastic. Make sure all the wires inside this new plug are as tight as possible on all the screw post connections and under each screw as neat as possible.

So your saying disconnect the heading sensor from the 2 wires at the bow and find a different power source for that?

Heading sensor connects wirelessly to trolling motor. Would seem that it would not matter which battery it's getting power from troller or boat battery.

That electrolysis could be coming from another boat parked nearby also. Why on earth would you say that the two systems should share Ground, and based on what technical reasoning? This forum can be dangerous (or at least damaging) for some unsuspecting reader who takes advice from the wrong source. No trolling motor manufacturer EVER recommends that the Grounds of other power systems onboard the boat be connected to the TM. In fact, I know that doing so will usually pop a fuse in certain Minn Kota models. That fuse is there to attempt to protect the electronics from people who ignorantly connect the TM ground to the another power system on the boat.

OP....do you happen to have a jumpstart switch or battery selector installed? You definitely have some electrolysis going on and since you mentioned just installing an ultrex....please review pages 29-31 of the installation manual. https://www.minnkotamotors.com/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=4045
