2 part question.
1. I'm dabbling with the idea of adding scent to my jigs. I've heard it can really help in the summer months. Who here does and whats your experience with it.
2. My cheap humminbird finder doesn't show the thermocline, How deep has it been running at lately on Ray Roberts. I caught some good numbers in 12' of water at about 8' deep. I'm assuming the thermocline is deeper than 8' in 89 degree water but I could be wrong.

Scent.. some people swear by adding scent and I am not one of them. I catch plenty with just a straight jig. If I need to add scent to a jig, I will just add a minnow (only a Summer thing).
Thermocline... I have never looked for the thermocline. It really is unnecessary info IMO. Just by fishing you can tell where the thermocline is based on how deep you catch your fish and the depth they seem to be concentrated (most numerous) at.
This is just my opinion.

I don't use scents but that's not to say they don't work. If you have confidence in them (and a lot of people do)then by all means they work.

Scents make sense. If it smells like a shad, they are more likely to hang on... maybe just enough time to set your hook! Thermocline you'll see on your depth finder as distinct line that looks like debris or a cloud. No oxygen below since it is made up of decaying matter.

I was wondering because I was night fishing and I could see ALOT of crappie speeding up to my jig and getting right on it and not taking it...even some stopped right at it as if smelling it like a dog...then wondering away.
It seemed as if they were gonna make that much of an attempt to chase down a real minnow, and was able to catch it...99.9% of the time that minnow is ate.

Give it a try. It only cost a few bucks and then you can decide or in the case you described a crappie nibble might be of some benefit.

Ive been using slab slobber and crappie nibbles for quite awhile, Ill also use spike it garlic markers and tip the orange here recently .I dont use them all the time but when the bite is tough ive got them and I feel like it really help get them to bite. and like texexp said they will hold on to it longer. before every trip first thing I do after I launch the boat is spray slabslobber shad scent on my hands to cover up the gas, sunscreen scent on my hands. just my opinion of course.

Last week on Lavon, they didn't want to touch a jig without a crappie nibble on it. But as was mentioned above, even if a scent doesn't up the bit count, it can often get them to hold onto the bait just a moment longer before deciding it's not real food, and that moment can give you time to react and set the hook.
Fishin' to stock Lake Crisco.
