Not only that, it's just out there waiting to snag a hook.

I take mine off.

The cleaner and more orderly you keep a yak the less problems you will have...

Well, I take mine off as well for many of the reasons listed above. In saying that, I admit, I failed to replace it before getting back on the road! I chuckled at my bonehead move, as soon as I realized it and pulled over to properly display it. This was three days AFTER starting this thread! hammer

All the more reason just to leave it on and not have to worry about forgetting it and having the LEO of your choice pull you over to give you a slip of paper that no one wants to get! hammer peep

My red "flag" is a piece of small flat red cordage used for climbing, bout 8" long or so. No need to remove, I just wrap it around my rear handle if need be.

By law the flag must be 12"x12".

Lowe's will give you their red plastic flags for long lumber loads, but I was getting my LP tank filled at Tractor Supply, and they had a stack of really heavy-duty plastic flags that are tough, and will probably last for years. I grabbed one while the LP tank filler was distracted. I wish I had grabbed two! They're about 12" x 24".

I try to remember to remove mine, especially if I'm going with someone who will be taking pics (don't care for the look of the flag hanging off the stern while in the water). If pics not in the plan, or if I just forget, I've been known to leave it on.

BIL rigged up a three way red reflector that attaches to the rudder mount on my OK. No flag for me. Logged at least 25,000 miles and never an issue. It stays there fishing fresh or briney.

You may want to rethink that. If you get rear ended, they could claim you were at fault because you did not "flag" your long load as required by Texas law. My Pro Angler 12 doesn't stick out too far. I flag it for legal reasons more than to improve the visibly. A $5 flag takes 20 seconds to install while I am tying ropes off to secure the kayak.
