I have a 2012 ram 2500 6.7 Cummins and my check engine light came on, did the key thing to see the codes but there isn't any codes coming up.. is there a way for me to reset the check engine light myself without going to dealer or autozone.. would like to try that and see if it stays off since there isn't any codes before I go to dealer and have em look at it.. Being Texas in July I would really like the remote start to work but it won't with check engine light on.. lol.. appreciate any info.. thanks

Sometimes my Grand Cherokee's goes off by itself, sometimes it goes to the shop. Disconnecting the battery never worked. Welcome to fca.

unhook the batteries for 5 minutes, that will reset the computer and the light.

If you still have the check engine light, make sure gas cap has been secured well. It will clear after a few miles of driving and reset. Just an easy thing to do just in case.

Use a code reader to see if there are any codes. Some code don't come on when you do the key thing, at least on my truck.
Luckily I have not had a code come up in years on my old 2000.

What is this key thing?
I thought you needed a reader of some kind with the OBDII? If the light goes away it is a more trivial problem or the condition isn't persisting that caused the light. If it is something worse it will save the code and it wont go away until cleared. Disconnecting the battery should clear it but you may have to wait a few minutes for it to clear, not just disconnect and hook back up.

The "key thing" he's referring to is cycling the key on/off 3 times quick. On the last "on" cycle, a code will show up on the odometer (example: p0341). After that, you can look the code up on the web and get an idea of what you're dealing with. This works on most Chrysler/Dodge vehicles, but not all. Normally a hard code will be stored.

Thank you, was not aware you could do that without a obdII reader.
