I have a G3 aluminum boat and catch shad for bait but they seem to die within 2 hours. I put them in the livewell and run the aerator but they still die fairly quickly. I leave the bottom plug in so that they do not escape and plug up my drain and have a screen on the overflow drain. Any thoughts on what else I can do?

This time of year (due to water temps) it is a necessity to have an actual "bait" tank. I don't believe ther is anyway around it. There is a big difference in "live" shad and "lively" shad. It take salt, ice, and a good filter system to keep bait.

non iodized salt and a frozen bottle of water may help but if all red nosed there hitting sides and killing themselves.

Go online and type in striper soup bait house they have some 26 gallon bait tanks that work with salt and ice

I've seen a few get by for about a half a day with one of those 18/20 gallon tubs like from hardware store, with a bubbler from academy. It's round and keeps the shad from getting in the corners. It's not a great solution, but would help with your space.

2 hours is pretty good at this time of year. For what its worth, I've caught lots of hybrids on fresh dead cut shad.

Longest living shad I have found so far. Seriously I have a 40 gal barrel shad tank with a 12v pump and filter I will give somebody if they want it. It's in Abilene and in my way. Sorry to hi-jack your post.

Hybrids will hit dead fresh shad, stripers want live shad thats frisky. Best way to keep them is a bait take with the proper chemicals, filters, and aireators. My grayline had 3 filters. The aireator needs to not be too strong because it will tire them out. With a baitwell, I'd use non iodised salt, shad keeper, and a aireator with a filter. Also keep the water cool, use a frozen bottle of water.

Sorry to hi-jack your post. I will take it if you don't want it. I am more then willing to cover shipping it if you don't mind dropping it off? Thanks, Eric

Thanks for all the tips guys. 1. I think my aerator is too strong and does tire them out. My tank is square, creating a Rudolph issue. I will go with a bait tank aerator combo and mount it on my back casting deck and apply ice, filter etc.

Nothing will work other than a bait tank. It's the filter that really keeps them alive. You would not believe the scales that come out of my filters when I've had shad in that tank.

For those I you that add salt, how much per gallon of water? Also for the frozen water bottle, is 1 16 oz bottle per 20 gal enough?

Nothing will work other than a bait tank. It's the filter that really keeps them alive. You would not believe the scales that come out of my filters when I've had shad in that tank. So true. My current boat has oval insulated livewells with an aerator pump from the factory. I made some filters for them to try to keep the clutter from the Grayline out of the boat and have more room up front. They work, but are not very user friendly, and are a pain in the butt to clean out during the day, so I went back to bringing the Grayline. I don't run the aerator pump on the Grayline much at all unless I have a schitload of bait in the tank, it works great with it off and just the filter pump running. Use a handfull of salt to every 10 gallons of H20. I use a little ice when it is really hot out, and if I keep them for the next day, but if you fill it with tap water it stays good for all day, or at least does for me.
