I am looking for a first long surf rod for port aransas etc. area. I saw the Penn Prevail Surf Casting Rod 11 foot medium-heavy rod that has good comments. I want to spend 75-150$ max. I want to throw lures, live baits or weights. I also read about the Cabela's Salt Striker 11 foot fast extra heavy. I don't want to over analyze. Nor am I ready for super expensive gear like my fresh water stuff. The reel I have is a Shimano NASCI C5000XG. Any help would be appreciated.

The Penns seem like they'd meet your needs.
I am using St. Croix Mojo Surfs. They are kind of in the middle in terms of price. But I did seriously consider the Penns especially at their price point. You should be happy with them. I too have only seen good reviews and they seem to be built well.
Just make sure you test the action so that it will meet the type of fishing you plan to do.

ive been looking online for a decent 9' rod to use in surf and on the pier. ive narrowed it down to the penn battle II combos. pretty decent prices. ive used the first generation Penn Battle offshore for tuna and they held up well.
