Im in the process of looking for a new to me boat and have seen a lot of comments about the Yamaha HPDI... im curious what the issues with them are and if there are any other problematic motors that are know for issues to avoid while searching for my boat purchase?

I'm running a Yamaha SHO, have 0 problems with it and would never own anything else but like any engine that uses oil and gas you have to take care of them and that means proper maintenance. Keep the oil, oil and fuel filters changed as required and use only the ones recommended in your owners manual. There are a few year models of all manufacturers that had issues but for the most part if they were maintained properly you should be ok.

I've had zero problems with my 225 Yamaha. I do have every thing changed once a year such a mentioned by Gig'Em Aggies above. Routine maintence and good starting batteries.

Any motor that has not been maintained can be a pig. Ficth was a pig from day one.

Just Google HPDI and you will understand avoiding them.

People on here that have one on their boat will tell you they are great and they have never had an issue.....cause one day they know they will need to sell theirs.

If you're gonna get a boat without warranty, get one with an Optimax. They are tanks and will last a long time with proper maintenance.

I am running a 2008 250 HDPI and have never had a problem and yes I would go with another Yamaha on a new boat.

Any motor can be a headache... try to look at service records to be sure all recalls have been done, all yearly maintenance has been done, take it to a dealership that specializes in that motor to have it looked at... if the seller really wants to sell it, either they will or you take it to a reputable dealer..
