I am starting to think I have an obsession with fly fishing gear. I find myself searching ebay looking for deals on just about anything. I bought a 4wt rod a couple months ago and now I am already wanting a 8wt.
I buy flys by the dozen it seems like weekly.
I have discovered I like furled leaders so I want to try them all. I have a mono, floro and I just ordered a nylon leader.
I am definitely not wealthy so I might need a intervention. smile

40% of fly fishing gear at Gander Mountain, 50% off line and leaders.....in Lewisville at store closing. Should be the same in Tyler.

Not sure if this is an effective intervention, but this is a pretty good deal if you need an extra reel for that 4wt:

There is a very easy solution. Just start tying your own flies.

Then you will spend all of your money on fly tying materials and you won't have any money left to buy more fly fishing gear...

Man, you guys are just plain cold. He says he needs help and you just feed the addiction grin

By the way, you can find some awesome deals on Craigslist. I got 2 fly reels and 7 fly boxes with flies for $50 one time.

And nothing like tying your own unique flies and catching fish on them either.

Sorry, we are all the same and have no cure for the addiction so we try to feed it a little at a time. A 30 dollar fly line on sale on Ebay here, Some fly hooks and hackle from BPs next week, a Cabela's glass rod on sale the following week...............................

We ask ourselves the same questions. If I buy that 9 ft rod will I get more distance or feel or a better presentation? If I tie that fly in white will I catch more fish than Robert Hunter?

I have the same problem and then saw this response with the Orvis reel on sale. I have two different sized rods and 2 flylines for each. Seeing this sale solves my issue of whether to get extra spools that cost more than this reel. Thanks for the link! Also want to try some of those articulated streamers. I know bass will love them.

There's definitely an endorphin rush that hits just after hitting the "buy" button. It's similar to the endorphin rush of when a fish hits.

There is no cure except bankruptcy. And even that is not a sure cure.

You can, however, ameliorate the effects by going fishing - it is harder to make purchases when you are fishing.

You get over it.

After a couple years you realize you only use maybe 20% of that soviet arms cache of fly gear. Then you grind your teeth thinking about how much it all cost you. Then you watch in glee as many people of your former self march right into cabelas to get their 5th pair of forceps, 3rd chest pack, and all the other stuff that makes you look like you're about to invade Poland.

Fyi, I went through the same episode about 6 or 7 years ago, be it eBay deals, classified ads, and product reviews 24/7. Reality catches up eventually. You then realize the true virtue of discovery isn't looking at and buying new equipment, but seeing your current equipment through a different lens.

Fly fishing is meant to be simplistic. Besides, when I'm standing a foot in water, the last thing I care about my latest purchase.

I can't says as I have ever had an addiction to buying fly fishing equipment. In fact I have never bought a single fly. I started out tying before I started fishing. When I do have an urge to buy something I go fishing and think about the possible purchase while I'm out there. If after that I think it's worth it I'll get it. However the last fly fishing purchase I got was a sort of impulse buy. I found a pair of Simms rip rap shoes st 40% off. But I had been needing some new wading shoes for a while. My old ones are starting to fall apart.

Now off-roading and camping equipment that is sn addiction for me.

Many moons ago I was at a buddy's house and we went in through the garage. He had a jumble of fishing rods in a corner. I suggested that we could figure out how to hang and organize them. He corrected me. With just a jumble of rods his wife could not tell f a new one had joined them. I learned something. Besides there is a need to be prepared just in case one is presented the opportunity. Do you know anyone with only one guitar? Only one gun? Do you have only one pan in the kitchen (I cook as well). Fly tying material is like doing an inventory of beauty products in the house (Don't go there).

You could also start building rods. That's even more effective that fly tying..................

"Hi, I'm Mick and I'm a flyfishinggearoholic!"

"Hi, Mick"

"It's been six days since I bought my last fly rod!"

"And four days since I bought my last gear."

"And two days since I bought my last fly tying stuff."

"Never mind."

Ain't that the truth! I can't leave FTU, Bass Pro, or any fly shop without dropping over $50 worth of fly tying materials. I should just call up Hareline and have them ship me some of everything.

Years ago, I ran into a friend in a fly shop.

"I didn't know you flyfished" we both said to each other.

"Do you tie flies?" He asked.

"No," I said."I have a life."

Now I have a room in the house called The Tying Room and it is full to overflowing.

Need details. What brand of 2 wt and do you still have the itch to pick up an 8 wt?

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you as far as addicted to buying stuff. My wife has threatened to cut up my credit card if I don't stop buying flies online. She doesn't understand that if your catching fish, fish are tearing up your flies. Plus there always seems to be something I don't have that looks like a bass might want to eat it.

Most of my shopping is online because I'm on the wrong side of Tarrant county to make too many trips to Cabelas, Bass Pro, or Orvis. There is a Gander mountain in Arlington, but it is closing. There wasn't that much fly fishing gear there, but Walmart and Academy near here don't have anything.

I'm secretly squirreling away $20 here and there to get a 2 wt myself.

Lol, I have an addiction as well, but I have mine under control, or I should say my wife has my addiction under control. I can get what ever I want, just have sell like item to fund it. That's why my 3wt combo is up for sale. Sold my 5 and 8 to get a 2 and 4, now the 3 is up for sale to get a 6wt mangrove. Lol

I paid for a Gloomis GLX on ebay but I have yet to receive it, most likely will never get it plus the person I bought it from does not respond to my messages. Tomorrow is their last day to respond or ebay will be refunding the money.
I would buy another Allen fly rod in 2wt but it looks like they do not make a 2wt.
I am pretty sure I have talked myself into a TFO Finess 2wt.

I picked up a Cabela's CGR glass 2 weight for $65 last Christmas. Money well spent. It handles the short stuff well and fighting a big redbreast sunfish feels wrestling with a tarpon. With a 2 weight you're not bombing 80 foot casts so glass vs. graphite really is irrelevant. The only thing I don't like about it is the dumb friction reel seat. I've figured out a way to make it work, but it's always there causing doubt in the back of my mind. If I get a little more time, I may experiment with some surgery to get a locking reel seat on it.

With that said if I were going to do it again, I would probably go with a 3 weight though because you have way more line choices in 3 weight than 2 weight.

I love my Finesse 2 wt. it is my rod of choice. I have a Redington Zero reel with an extra spool. One is filled with a TFO WF3F line and the other a Bass Pro Small creek DT2F line. The Finesse casts both lines with ease. I generally grab the 3wt spool just to help with the winds here in TX, and the larger flies that I tend to throw. 2 wt line I can throw the same flies, but it gets ugly with the wind so it's used on the calmer days when permitted..

I got to cast a 2wt Finess this week. I could not cast it very well but I had never cast a 2wt before.
Not sure now if a 2wt is for me,it made me like my 4wt Allen rod even more.

^^^ 1+. Feeling the rod flex all the way down into your hand can be strange as well if you are use to tip flex graphite.
