Just wondering how many here on the TFF catch and release your crappie? I keep a few small ones (10 to 12") but for the most part, release them.

When on a guide trip the customer gets to keep what they want. When I fish by myself, I keep a few to eat but release most unless I am checking piles and don't want to clean any then I release them all.

I keep more now than I used to as my in laws love them and I like to keep them stocked up. I would say I keep less than 500 a year.

I keep the majority I catch. I don't get to fish as often as I would like, so I stock up when I can.

I usually keep a dozen crappie 12"s or over.

Release the rest to catch again another day.

Presently,I don't get to fish that often other than on a occasional guide trip or filling a back seat. I prefer to keep all the legal fish I catch, which is just enough to satisfy my crappie taste buds.

I fish once a week and rarely keep any sac-a-lait - only when someone wants a few for supper. I eat mostly speckled trout from the freezer - caught in Louisiana where the limit is 25.

I keep them and usually give them to another fisherman if I don't catch many or give them to my father in law since my freezer is full.

I keep I usually put 10-12 in the livewell and release the rest. I usually give the bank bound guys the fish about 1/2 the time.

foodfish too eat is great, but I feel there is so much catching these days the size of the fish is low. think limits should be 12 or at least 15.8 or 10 years ago one could catch 2lb crappies in numbers now only in spring maybe. increase fishing and keeping has hurt. frown

The more you catch and keep the bigger the fish will get. Usually when a lake has small fish it is due to too much fish and limited bait. Cull the herd if you want bigger fish.

On most Texas lakes a 10" fish is 2-3 years old. Crappie have a lifespan of 5-7 years. If the limits went to 12" you could have an overpopulation situation since the harvest won't be as big leaving more fish competing for bait and stunting their growth.

The 12" limit works on some lakes in MS because at 2 years old the fish is 12". They grow bigger quicker.

My .02 cents for what it's worth.
