This was not a TP&W bashing post, even though some just cannot help themselves.

On-site, biologists found the mussels attached to other nearby boats and on submerged marina infrastructure. Additionally, they found several size classes of adult and juvenile mussels at two different sites in the lake, indicating the lake is infested with an established, reproducing population.

This is pretty disheartening for us and our many partners, including marinas, who work to prevent this invasive species from spreading its two new river basins with infestations this year, said Monica McGarrity, TPWD Aquatic Invasive Species team lead.

Well here comes another round of invasive regulations on fishermen but not on any state agencies. They (TPWD) got Federal funding, a person with an anti-business agenda (MM quoted above) heading things up and not a soul to stand in the way. Maybe now they'll just out and out outlaw fishing from a boat, using a bait bucket, live well, or even a vehicle to get from waterway to waterway in the name of "resource protection," but with power, politics and even money (lots of federal funds, private donations and other sources of the green stuff to chase after) as the primary goal and "resource protection," as the primary means.

Working as a free lance fisheries biologist I've found Zebra mussels all over places they've "yet to be reported," in but have been unable to gain much of a foothold due to the heat. This will likely be the case in Central Texas as well. But that won't stop TPWD from throwing weight around, grabbing more power and control, and punishing user groups for simply existing.

Yes I'm both a fan of and a decrier of TPWD and their inconsistent policies, heavy handed enforcement and most of all, a very long history of getting into bed with crooked politicians and other criminals. If nobody shines light into the darkness, we all will never see.

Trouble they may be, but zebra mussels are not an excuse for more governmental controls over any aspect of our lives.

Why don't we just do away with TP&W and be done with it since they do such a bad job?

I think we need to do away with pleasure boats, they are the ones transporting these things.

They need to be sunsetted and let another agency take over.

There is a lot of corruption in TPWD, but this is also common in many Texas State Departments and Boards. The people who work in these agencies are all bout them getting their paycheck and piece of the pie. They say they are working for the safety or improvement of the people of Texas, but in reality they only care about their back pocket........

They never planned to stop them or they would have. "Clean your boat to stop the mussels." What a joke

Actually for the most part and in the arena they belong in, fisheries, wildlife, historical sites, parks, etc. They cannot be beat by any other similar state organization.

It is when they start to become involved in politics, money, power and control beyond those things that there is a problem.

For instance, 30 years ago the world catch was roughly 20% farmed and 80% wild caught. Now it is closer to 60/40. So farmed fish is the major supply for all the world's fish.

Also, as a state, Texas consumes more fish than any other in the US.

But, almost none of those fish are produced here. A state with natural and human resources greater than most countries, a ready market for all the fish that could be produced here, and we just don't raise hardly any fish in Texas. Why?

Why? Because the fish farmers use too much water, introduce invasive species, and endanger the native fish and wildlife. They and the deer ranches have a PROVEN track record. ALL BAD!

If you eat, you are involved in aquaculture. And it would be better if you researched a few things for yourself rather than parroting somebody like David Suzuki.

The track record for fish farms is that they produce over 60% of the world catch and provide sustainable, healthy, high quality protein for a majority of the planet. And, yes just like any farm, factory, mine, or plant, some create more problems than others.

But forsaking a multi-hundred billion dollar market, hundreds of thousands of jobs, just to have some political borders the fish have never recognized anyhow, is just plain crazy. No fish farmer I know has done anything harmful to their environment and none has done anything other than provide a good quality food source for their populace. Surely less damaging than any cattle ranch, row crop farm, or wild harvest operation I know of.

Water is reused over and over at fish farms, not consumed, waste water is usually recycled for irrigation, concentrated wastes are made into fertilizers. Processing wastes are rendered back to fish food. Safe, clean, efficient, effective, sustainable, and profitable.
