I've had USAA insurance for many years on everything I own. They aren't the cheapest but they've been decent to deal with. I can tell you if you have an issue and are getting hassled don't waste your time with the entry level person and go straight to the next level. I have several family members that have been with USAA for well over 30 years, some 40 years I believe. I've been with them since 1994 and had one large claim due to a lightening strike to my home. They were great after a few initial hassles. Fortunately, I've never had to use Progressive though I've insured several trailers, dirt bikes, RV's, and by boat by them through USAA.

I will say I don't think they are as good as they used to be. Their roadside service is contracted out to a company called Agura or something like that. I just had my first blowout on a Ford F450 and the company USAA uses is terrible. They sent out some very young kid who had no idea how to change a tire in a DRW truck. He scratched my F450 aluminum wheels in several places and then couldn't even get the wheel off. It's costing them almost $1700 just for the outer wheel for the F450. I had to deal with getting the tire changed myself and I missed a full day of work. USSAA told me they had nothing to do with any of it so they weren't responsible. I told them I pay my monthly bill to usaa, not Agura. USAA would not take any responsibility whatsoever. After days of arguing and numerous phone calls, emails, documentation, photos, etc. I am getting a check to replace the wheel, at least it's supposed to be on the way.

Another lesson learned is to video tape every single thing so you have proof. Too many people will lie and try to screw you out of every penny they can. Companies change their tune really quick when you show them video and threaten to sue them.

As a military brat I decided to take a look at USAA about making the switch. We went through everything and it was all good until I was asked if we had any pets. I said yes a dog. Has it ever bitten anyone? Well about 7 years ago my 2 year old niece startled the dog who was asleep under a blanket by kissing him on the nose, the dog snapped and got her on the lip, nothing major, just a nip. Upon sharing this the tone of the conversation changed dramatically and I was told they could not cover my home and was transferred to a Foremost rep. I declined to proceed any further. I asked the guy, so what if I had lied? I was disappointed because of all the good I had heard about them. Kind of sucked.

I am the rare exception it appears. USAA treated me like a piece of dog $hit. I was completely honest with them. In hindsight I should have lied.

Its easy for an insurance company to deny the claim to see if you have the bucks and the patience to fight them. Its rigged against the customer.

Had somewhat the same experience w USAA being retired military I was with them for quite a while-they about had a cow when they asked me how fast my bass boat would run-USAA said at the time they wouldn't insure anything that went over 30 mph on the water

I have had USAA since 94 and never had an issue. Progressive also handles motorcycle insurance for USAA.

My wife just had to make her first auto claim with USAA and couldn't believe how easy it was. We have the additional 20% value total loss coverage on all of our cars. For $20 it was well worth it. It made it possible for us to get the car she has been wanting for a while now.

My last FJ got totaled out when I was rear ended and pushed in the back of a flatbed truck. The guy that hit me had Progressive and they took forever to declare it a total loss even with a bent frame. The funny thing is that 2 months after it was totaled I got a call from the body shop saying Progressive never picked it up.
