I am getting started with fishing, and also teaching my three year old as I go.

I am looking for some good spot in Plano to learn on. We have been going to Chisholm Trail park, and have caught a few sunfish, but its slow going.

I am really looking for a place without all of the distractions (my son loves the playground and Chisholm Trail smile ) where we can get a few on the line. I am not too concerned with species or size at this point, just looking for some production.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Just to add, I have looked at the Google map (thanks to all of those who have contributed), but I am looking for some actual experience on some of the spots.

Thanks again!

The pond and creek at Preston and Legacy-Tennyson has a LOT of bluegill that are easy to catch. Also has a lot of small bass that you can learn on, no distractions but the fish. Also try catfishing, find a creek where there is a "hole", where the water runs into a deeper spot, especially if it has wood or rocks, and cast your bait. Go get you some punch bait ($5-$7 at academy, dicks, bps, etc have not seen at walmart), it is oh so much easier to use than other cat bait that I've used over the years. Don't have to touch it like chicken liver... punch treble hook into it with stick and cover and pull out by grabbing line! Work better in my opinion too.

Check out big lake park. There is a pond north of the parker rd rainier Rd intersection. I fish the creek just so that of that pond. Tons of perch in there that will bite just about anything.

Thanks! That's where we have been going. I guess I had the name wrong.

Near Commonsgate if fishing the creek part, for the pond I opened a $100 savings account with the bank and told them I'd park there after hours to fish and they said no problem.

I think the pond at Oak Point Park Nature & Retreat Center is not a bad place to take a kid to learn from the bank. There are a lot of bluegills, small crappie, catfish, white bass and even largemouth bass. I see people with various rigs, especially live bait catching fish. I have been there to brush up on my fly fishing skills. With just a little copper john I get hit by bluegill on just about every cast. I suspect with live bait and a bobber it should be a lot of fun for a kid.

I caught about a 1 foot gator at the Preston and Tennyson pond many years ago. I thought it was fake an ran a power worm over the mouth and snap!I also am not trying to scare anyone as it was removed a year or two after that.

So you caught an alligator then let it go? Why didn't you call animal control?

Not judging, just curious.

I was 15 and It was small. I'm from Louisiana and didn't think to call. I didn't really see it as a threat. It is a native species. The same reason I wouldn't call them on a bobcat I suppose but they are down there🙂

In Louisiana we call them "pets" and like to feed them chickens.
