The free GoPro software you can download is basic but works great for simple videos and for learning. If you want something with more bells and whistles then Adobe Premiere will do pretty much everything and is not too pricey.

(edit, I bought the Adobe suite at the same time I bought my Macbook, and I must have gotten a great deal because I got Photoshop and Premiere and didn't pay what it appears Premiere goes for by itself now.)

Best free software is Lightworks.

It is a bulky, clunky program and isn't intuitive, but once you learn how to use it, it's great.

CyberLink PowerDirector is fairly inexpensive and easy to use.

I will second the Go Pro Suite that is free. It is not hard to use, although I probably don't know half of what it can actually do.

I use photoshop but I got it for free. It's expensive if you can't.
